Sony Considered The Last Of Us Collaboration With Tencent, Court Filing Shows

The Last of Us, a highly acclaimed PlayStation franchise currently available on consoles and PC, was potentially going to expand to mobile devices. Recent court documents show Sony explored a partnership with Tencent to create a mobile game based on the post-apocalyptic series.

Olivier Courtemanche, head of PlayStation Studios mobile, testified as part of Sony’s lawsuit against Tencent. His statement revealed that while the case focuses on Tencent’s game *Light of Motiram*, PlayStation representatives met with Tencent and its Aurora Studios team in China last year to discuss a potential *The Last of Us* project.

In July 2024, I and several colleagues from my team visited Shenzhen, China, to explore potential partnerships with Tencent and their game development studios, including Aurora Studios. According to a filing, we believed Aurora Studios was interested in working with us on a project related to The Last of Us.

They didn’t share any details about a potential Last of Us game in the document. Instead, someone from Aurora showed a slide with ideas for a Horizon collaboration from a meeting back in 2024, but apparently Sony had already shot that down before. It’s kinda weird they were bringing up something that had already been rejected, honestly.

Naughty Dog, the studio behind The Last of Us, canceled plans for a multiplayer game in late 2023 to concentrate on single-player experiences. In December 2024, they revealed their new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and earlier this year, creative director Neil Druckmann hinted that another, still-secret project is also in development.

While there haven’t been any spin-off games or mobile versions of The Last of Us yet, the story has found success as a popular and highly-rated HBO series. If you’re curious about a potential The Last of Us: Part III, here’s what we know so far.
