Sony Confirms 2 Spider-Verse Spinoffs Are In Development

Sony is growing its animated Spider-Man world with two new projects currently being developed. Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still doing well with Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Sony’s Spider-Verse films are also proving popular. The trilogy will conclude in 2027 with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, but Sony has plans to continue the franchise beyond that.

Sony Pictures Animation heads Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville recently told The Hollywood Reporter that two spin-off movies from the Spider-Verse are currently in the works. While they wouldn’t confirm who’s writing the Spider-Punk and Spider-Gwen films, Belson did state, “we are in active development on both.”

A movie centered around Spider-Punk, the popular character Daniel Kaluuya voiced in Across the Spider-Verse, was announced in 2025. The film, planned as an animated project, was being co-written by Kaluuya and Ajon Singh, but updates have been scarce. Kaluuya is set to return as Spider-Punk in the next Spider-Verse movie, which may reveal more about the character’s upcoming story.

There’s been talk about a Spider-Gwen movie, though it hasn’t been officially announced yet. Hailee Steinfeld’s animated version of the character has become very popular in the Spider-Verse films, and fans are just as eager to see her get her own solo film as they are to see Miles Morales in a live-action movie.

Sony Pictures is developing a Spider-Woman movie, according to producer Amy Pascal. It’s currently unknown if the film will be animated or live-action, or which version of Spider-Woman will be featured – it could be Spider-Gwen (Gwen Stacy) or another character from Marvel comics.

Deadline initially reported the planned Spider-Woman movie would actually feature multiple Spider-Women from different eras, and this recent comment might be hinting that Spider-Gwen will be one of them.

There’s been talk of a live-action Spider-Gwen project happening eventually, but it’s unknown if that’s what the commenter meant. It could also be a plan for an animated Spider-Gwen spin-off, like the one being made for Spider-Punk.

Okay, so it’s super early to really judge, but the news of two more Spider-Verse spin-offs definitely shows Sony is all-in on building out its animated Marvel world. They’re clearly doubling down on that success, and I’m cautiously optimistic about where this is heading. It feels like they’re really committed to expanding that universe, and as a fan, that’s exciting!

Sony Goes All in on the Spider-Verse

Sony’s Spider-Verse movies have been a huge success for the studio. Across the Spider-Verse made almost twice as much money as Into the Spider-Verse, and both films were critically acclaimed. Currently, excitement for the next installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is as high as it is for any Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony really needed this success after its Spider-Man movies, separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, didn’t perform well. The releases of Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web have effectively ended that series of films.

The studio is hoping to regain momentum by focusing on more projects connected to the Spider-Verse. A live-action Spider-Noir TV show, starring Nicolas Cage reprising his role from Into the Spider-Verse, is scheduled for release on Amazon in 2026.

Rumors suggest Sony is developing a mature, R-rated animated movie based on Venom. It’s unclear if this film will continue the story started in the Tom Hardy movies, but it could potentially tie into the Spider-Verse films, expanding Sony’s animated Spider-Man universe with new spinoffs.

Sony appears to be making a smart move by continuing to invest in the popular animated Spider-Verse films. Characters like Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk are particularly well-liked by fans and could be central figures in future installments.
