Sony closed Bluepoint Games, the studio known for its impressive remakes like Demon’s Souls, and laid off approximately 70 employees after deciding to halt work on their current game.
This decision comes after a difficult year for PlayStation’s plans to offer ongoing, online games. In January 2025, Sony stopped development on several multiplayer games that hadn’t been publicly announced. This included a live-service version of God of War that Bluepoint Games was creating.
This decision was part of a larger move away from risky online investments. Although Helldivers 2 became a success in 2024, other projects, such as Concord, didn’t perform well.
Bluepoint Games built its reputation on high-quality remakes, but when its parent company focused on online games, the studio’s options became limited.
Sony pulls the plug on Bluepoint after live-service pivot
Okay, so this is kinda sad news for us gamers. Bloomberg just reported that Sony is shutting down Bluepoint Games. They were the studio behind those amazing remakes, like Demon’s Souls, so it’s a real loss. I was really hoping they’d tackle another classic, but it looks like that’s not happening now.
Around 70 people will be laid off after a recent review of the business, and the studio will be closing its doors next month, according to a PlayStation representative.
A PlayStation spokesperson praised Bluepoint Games as a highly skilled team, recognizing their technical abilities and the fantastic games they’ve created for PlayStation fans. The spokesperson also expressed gratitude for Bluepoint’s dedication, imagination, and high-quality work.
After their plans for a live-service God of War game were cancelled, Bluepoint spent the past year presenting new concepts and ideas.
Although Sony never officially announced this project, Bloomberg had reported on it before its cancellation. The company assured employees they would try to limit any negative business effects, but didn’t say if there would be additional cuts.
