Sony Accuses Tencent Of “Playing A Shell Game” To Avoid Liability In Horizon Lawsuit

In a recent legal filing, Sony strongly refuted claims made by Tencent in their ongoing dispute over the game Light of Motiram, calling them baseless. This is similar to a quick return in tennis, responding directly to Tencent’s arguments.

According to The Game Post (and noted by Eurogamer), Sony argues in a recent court document that Tencent is actively trying to avoid responsibility for their mobile game, Light of Motiram, released in December 2024. Sony claims the game closely resembles the Horizon series. Tencent previously attempted to get the lawsuit – originally filed in July 2025 – dismissed, arguing Sony was trying to control the conventions of the game genre. However, Sony now asserts that the damage is already done and Tencent is just trying to deflect blame.

Sony argues that Tencent’s claim the lawsuit is premature doesn’t hold water. Despite months of advertising and announcing its game, Tencent allegedly pushed back the release of ‘Light of Motiram’ to 2027 *after* Sony filed the suit. Sony believes the damage is already done and ongoing, as the public quickly recognized ‘Light of Motiram’ as a copycat. Despite this, Tencent continued to promote the game and refused to take any accountability for its actions.

Most people are familiar with the shell game, a classic street hustle where a small object is hidden under one of several cups, and players bet on which cup conceals it. This game, which relies on quick hand movements to mislead players, has become a popular element in video games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Watch Dogs, among others.

Sony alleges that Tencent is improperly promoting its game, *Light of Motiram*, by using multiple studios under its control. Sony isn’t concerned with *which* studio does the promoting, but rather that Tencent, as the parent company and trademark holder, is ultimately responsible for the game’s promotion and owns the official website.

Sony claims that after being sued, Tencent tried to avoid responsibility by shuffling its brands and related companies around. According to Sony, Tencent attempted to hide its ownership and control of certain companies to prevent them from receiving legal notices. Now, Tencent Holdings is trying to avoid being subject to the lawsuit altogether. Sony points out that Tencent Holdings itself acknowledges its Games division owns Aurora Studios, the team developing Light of Motiram, and that all game revenue and debt are reported directly by Tencent Holdings, not individual subsidiaries. Furthermore, Sony alleges that Tencent promotes games like Light of Motiram under the Tencent name without clarifying which of its companies are actually responsible.

Sony believes Tencent’s actions threaten the future of the Horizon series. They argue that Tencent copied key elements of Horizon, including the main character Aloy, in a way that was so obvious that it was widely noticed by critics, fans, and the gaming industry. Because of this, Sony is asking the court to reject Tencent’s request.

Sony reportedly explored a partnership with Tencent to create a mobile game based on The Last of Us. It’s surprising to see them considering a collaboration with a major competitor like Tencent.
