Sonic The Hedgehog Mod Degrades Game Quality In Real Time In The Weirdest Way

The modding community can breathe new life into old games, either by providing them with a fresh makeover or increasing their difficulty when they were initially too easy. Over the past few years, we’ve witnessed an array of projects such as Resident Evil demakes, GTA enhancements, and an abundance of Baldur’s Gate 3 mods. However, a recent mod for Sonic the Hedgehog from 1991 stands out, as it dynamically alters the game’s visuals based on the player’s blast processing in real-time.

On his Bluesky account, Brandon Sheffield from Necrosoft Games demonstrated the functioning of the mod and provided a brief demonstration.

On the SGDK Discord, Vladikcomper has developed an extraordinary and humorous mod for Sonic the Hedgehog (MD). This modification alters the game’s visual quality, making it degrade into various resolutions and color ranges, depending on how you manage your blast processing meter. As gameplay progresses, the screen size adjusts accordingly.

The term “Blast Processing” coined by Sega of America referred to the Genesis/Mega Drive’s processing capabilities, even though it lacked a technical explanation and sounded impressive. This modification introduces a “Blast Processing Meter” on the right screen’s bottom part that displays the current processing power. If Sonic gets hit or slows down during gameplay, the graphics quality degrades significantly, resembling those of a nearly Game Boy-level system.

You can find this mod, and a slew of other Sonic-centric mods, here.

The latest Sonic the Hedgehog film had an incredible run during the holidays, and it looks like we’ll be seeing a fourth movie by March 2027 as part of the series.
