As someone who grew up with both Sonic the Hedgehog and The Lion King as part of my childhood memories, I’m excited to see how these two iconic franchises fare at the box office this weekend! While “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is expected to take the lead, I have a soft spot for Mufasa and his adventures in “Mufasa: The Lion King”. It’s been a while since we had a Disney prequel, and it’ll be interesting to see how this one stacks up against its predecessor.
A fast, human-like character with a blue hue is predicted to surpass the upcoming ruler of the Pride Lands in ticket sales this coming weekend.
In its opening weekend, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is expected to earn around $55 million to $60 million from approximately 3,800 North American cinemas, with Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” following closely behind, raking in about $50 million from over 4,000 screens. Since “Sonic” won’t debut on the international box office until Christmas Day, “Mufasa” will dominate global rankings without competition. The prequel to “The Lion King” is projected to accumulate an extra $130 million internationally, which could result in a promising global start of approximately $180 million.
Neither movie is projected to set new franchise opening weekend records; in fact, “Sonic” may underperform its series average. This is typical for films released in December, which don’t usually have strong opening weekends. However, if the reviews are positive and word-of-mouth is good, these movies can maintain their popularity through January and beyond. For instance, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” debuted with only $36 million in 2017 but eventually grossed a massive $404 million domestically and $962 million worldwide. Similarly, “Wonka,” released last December, started with $39 million and ultimately earned $218 million in North America and $634 million globally.
Theater owners are crossing their fingers that the end of 2024 won’t be a quiet one for moviegoers, as there might not be a major blockbuster like “Avatar: The Way of Water” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to round off the year. Movies such as Universal’s “Wicked,” Disney’s “Moana 2,” and Paramount’s “Gladiator II,” which all opened in November, are expected to keep audiences coming during the holiday season and help reduce the gap between this year’s ticket sales and the previous years. As of now, domestic box office earnings are running about 4.8% lower than last year and a staggering 23% below 2019 levels, according to Comscore’s data.
Jeff Fowler has returned to helm “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” with Ben Schwartz once again providing the voice for the fast, blue hedgehog hero who loves taking down bad guys, and Jim Carrey reprising his role as Sonic’s nemesis, Doctor Robotnik – a mad scientist bent on world domination. In this new installment, budgeted at $122 million, Sonic joins forces with friends Tails and Knuckles to combat a new unknown enemy called Shadow the Hedgehog. However, an unexpected turn of events forces our heroes to join forces with Doctor Robotnik to save the planet. The 2020 “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie turned out to be a surprise hit, debuting with $58 million and eventually earning a total of $148 million domestically and $319 million worldwide – setting a record for the highest-grossing video game adaptation in North America at that time. The 2022 sequel surpassed its predecessor, opening to $72 million domestically and going on to earn $405 million globally. Although “Sonic 3” may have a slower start compared to its previous movies, it has the potential to increase its earnings during the holiday season and potentially become the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but express my excitement about Barry Jenkins, the esteemed director of “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk,” taking the helm for “Mufasa.” This captivating production delves into the transformative years of the future ruler of the Pride Lands. It’s a prequel to the 2019 photorealistic remake of “The Lion King,” directed by Jon Favreau, which despite some divided opinions, was an astounding success, earning a whopping $1.66 billion at the global box office following its impressive $191 million debut during the summer season.
The upcoming film titled “Mufasa” boasts music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, famously known for hits like “Hamilton,” “Encanto,” and “Moana.” The voice cast is headed by Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr., who portray the younger versions of Mufasa (originally voiced by James Earl Jones in the 2019 remake) and Scar (voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor in the same year’s remake). The star-studded cast also includes Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Mads Mikkelsen, and Blue Ivy Carter. With a budget exceeding $200 million, Disney hopes that “Mufasa” will be the must-see cinematic experience of the year to justify its high cost and maintain the studio’s successful run of films such as “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and “Moana 2.
Despite the fact that “Sonic” is expected to top the domestic box office, it seems like “Mufasa” might need to delay his coronation as king.
