As a lifelong fan of both Sonic and Mario, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and skepticism when it comes to the possibility of a crossover movie. On one hand, the thought of seeing these iconic characters share the silver screen is pure joy for any gamer like me. On the other hand, the logistics behind such a project seem daunting, especially considering the different animation styles and studio affiliations involved.

Could a collaboration film featuring Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario ever materialize? The director of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 suggests that any possibility is open for discussion, yet there might be one potential hurdle to overcome.

From my perspective as a gaming enthusiast, if I were to pose the question about a well-known video game character to someone outside the gaming world, chances are high they’d mention either Sonic or Mario. Being long-standing mascots for Nintendo and Sega, these characters have become almost iconic; it’s safe to say that they’re widely recognized by many.

However, while there’s always been a rivalry between the two series, they famously came together for 2007’s Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games.

15 years have passed, and both franchises – Super Mario Bros and Sonic – are still thriving, even on the big screen. “The Super Mario Bros Movie” ranks among the highest-grossing films in history, while the Sonic trilogy has received critical acclaim. Could their cinematic universes ever intersect?

Sonic 3 director is “open” to Sonic & Mario movie

During a pre-release interview, we questioned Director Jeff Fowler about the possibility of a collaboration between Sonic and Mario.

To put it simply, it’s challenging to pinpoint. Their unique animated aspects give them a distinct flair that sets them apart from our current approach. I hope this clarifies!

It’s clear that we’ve made an effort to make our characters look more lifelike, enabling them to blend seamlessly with both the real world and human actors. The boundary between animated and live-action is becoming increasingly blurred in this process.

We’re always ready for new suggestions or proposals, so any idea is welcome here. In other words, it’s possible that anything could happen.

It’s improbable that Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games will be made into a film, given that it’s not a movie in the first place. However, voice actor Ben Schwartz, who plays Sonic, has come up with an alternative concept instead.

In this conversation with Variety, he shared that there are two things he admires greatly: first, Chris Pratt whom he finds absolutely fantastic; second, the Olympic Games. However, regarding the topic of Chris Pratt playing Mario, let’s steer clear of that subject in this interview.

I find it quite extraordinary to contemplate the possibility of a spin-off for Super Smash Bros., given how coordinated multiple studios would need to be.

Based on reports, it seems that a film adaptation for Smash Bros could become reality if multiple competing studios could collaborate on the project and share the earnings, which would indeed be a fantastic outcome.
