Sung Jinwoo is pushing his ability to gather energy to dangerous levels in *Solo Leveling*. He’s so focused on getting stronger and appearing impressive that he’s doing things that are ethically questionable, like killing enemies and turning them into loyal undead soldiers. While his Shadow Soldiers haven’t usually protested this (as viewers of the anime will see in Season 3), that’s starting to change.
Chapter 58 of *Solo Leveling: Ragnarok* reveals the consequences of Sung Jinwoo’s earlier actions, specifically his transformation of humans into Shadow Soldiers. During a fight with Jinwoo’s son, Sung Suho, Hwang Dongsoo remembers his past life as Greed, a devoted Shadow Soldier, and openly expresses the pain Jinwoo caused him. Unbeknownst to Dongsoo, Jinwoo is listening to everything.
Solo Leveling: Ragnarok 58 Forces Jinwoo to Face the Harsh Reality Felt By Soldiers in His Shadow Army
Chapter 58 of *Solo Leveling: Ragnarok* focuses on Hwang Dongsoo grappling with the realization of how he died in the previous timeline, at the hands of Jinwoo. Seeing Sung Suho’s Shadow Armor triggered a vivid memory: Jinwoo sitting on a rooftop after his battle with Thomas Andre at the International Guild Conference.
Fans expect to see a powerful scene from the original story in Season 3 of the anime. In it, Jinwoo gives Dongsoo’s shadow the name “Greed” and then forces it to repeatedly hit its head against the ground as punishment for harming Yoo Jinho. The memory of this brutal punishment overwhelms Hwang Dongsoo, leaving him frozen with fear. It’s a moment so intense that Dongsoo becomes the first Shadow to describe his time with Sung Jinwoo as “slavery.”
Greed was unlike Beru and Igris, who genuinely seemed to respect Jinwoo, even though they were initially bound to him by force. Throughout his time serving Jinwoo, Greed never offered his loyalty willingly, and remembers only feeling pain and humiliation.
In the latest chapter of *Solo Leveling: Ragnarok* (Chapter 58), Sung Suho defeats and kills Dongsoo, but not before Dongsoo expresses his resentment towards Suho’s father. Meanwhile, Jinwoo has a unique connection with his Shadow Soldiers – he experiences everything they do, including what Beru sees and feels. Since Beru witnessed the fight between Dongsoo and Suho, it’s almost certain that Jinwoo also saw the entire battle unfold.
Hwang Dongsoo Finally Shares His Feelings About Being Turned Into a Shadow Soldier in Solo Leveling: Ragnarok
Dongsoo’s confession about his feelings for Jinwoo confirms what many fans suspected all along: Greed never willingly joined Jinwoo’s Shadow Army, not even at the very end. While it was pretty clear, hearing Dongsoo express it himself makes that truth even more impactful. It really highlights that characters like Kim Chul and Hwang Dongsoo never truly cared for Jinwoo as much as readers might have wanted.
Before this moment, only two characters had previously discussed what happened with Jinwoo’s army. Min Byunggyu was the first, sharing the unsettling truth about Jinwoo’s power with Cha Haein after the Jeju Island Raid. However, the *Solo Leveling* anime changes this by having the character who asks Jinwoo to revive him also request Jinwoo’s healing abilities to save Haein.
Fans of *Solo Leveling* have only heard directly from a former Shadow Soldier once before: when Jinwoo encountered Kim Chul after the timeline reset at the end of the original story. Even then, Kim Chul was so impressed by Jinwoo that he described his feelings as love. It was obvious that Chul was still affected by Jinwoo’s power, and simply being near him brought back those strange, powerful emotions.
However, for Dongsoo, enough time may have passed in this new reality for Jinwoo’s influence to fade. Seeing Suho now triggers the painful memories of his past experiences. Crucially, Dongsoo doesn’t feel the same confusing emotions of affection and devotion that Kim Chul did. He remembers being forced to serve in Jinwoo’s army as a terrible ordeal, and he deeply resents Jinwoo for it.
Jinwoo Will Never Repent For His Sins, and Dongsoo is Partially to Blame For That
In *Solo Leveling*, Sung Jinwoo sometimes did questionable things, but they were often presented as necessary evils. For example, he killed Kim Chul to transform him into a Shadow Soldier, which was crucial for defeating Barca, the leader of the Red Gate’s Ice Elves. Similarly, he turned Min Byunggyu into a Shadow Soldier out of need. However, his decision to turn Hwang Dongsoo into a Shadow Soldier was different – it was motivated purely by personal revenge and a desire to inflict pain.
In the latest chapter of *Solo Leveling: Ragnarok* (Chapter 58), Dongsoo is the only character who actually forces Jinwoo to confront the consequences of his actions. However, Jinwoo still doesn’t face any real punishment. Dongsoo is ultimately a victim of the hunter world’s harsh reality – power determines everything. He tries to teach Jinwoo’s son a lesson through violence, but this ultimately leads him to the same unfortunate end he was trying to prevent.
Watching Dongsoo’s story unfold, I’m realizing he’s quickly becoming one of the most heartbreaking villains in *Solo Leveling*. It’s interesting because fans noticed the promotional art for Season 2 of *Solo Leveling: Ragnarok* strongly hinted at his connection to Greed. It feels like he’s fated to repeat the same role he played with Jinwoo – just a tool in someone else’s plans, this time for Suho. But it’s even worse than before. He won’t even control his own body. Instead, he’ll essentially *be* a weapon, his face used to smash into Suho’s opponents – a grim parallel to how Jinwoo forces Greed to slam his own face against the ground in Season 3 of *Solo Leveling*.
If Dongsoo had simply shared his hurt instead of attacking Suho, things might have turned out differently. Perhaps if Jinwoo had heard directly from Dongsoo about how awful it was to be forced into servitude, he would have realized his mistakes. Sadly, even with the changes in this timeline, Hwang Dongsoo’s life ended in tragedy, repeating the patterns of the past.
