Stories where characters easily overcome challenges and wield great power are becoming increasingly popular with audiences. It’s satisfying to watch someone effortlessly handle any situation. While this trend began with stories about people transported to other worlds (isekai), it has quickly expanded into many different types of genres.
While the anime Solo Leveling currently stands out as one of the best examples of the power fantasy genre – with its main character, Sung Jin-woo, becoming a symbol of overwhelming strength – there are still many other fantastic power fantasy anime available. Many of these are also ideal for viewers who enjoy watching multiple episodes in a row.
Solo Leveling Is The New Face of Power Fantasy Series
In the popular series Solo Leveling, the main character, Sung Jin-woo, is incredibly powerful. The story takes place in a world where Hunters fight monsters in mysterious dungeons, but traditionally, these Hunters couldn’t grow stronger over time. However, after a dangerous event inside a dungeon, Jin-woo gains a unique ability: he can level up and improve his skills with every battle.
At first, Jin-woo definitely faces challenges in his battles against strong opponents. But as the story progresses, it’s not just about winning – he starts defeating enemies with incredible ease and flair. By the end, he’s so powerful that he utterly terrifies the main villain, who had been built up over two seasons. Currently, Solo Leveling consists of two seasons, and there’s no official word on a third. However, given its immense popularity, it’s likely A-1 Pictures will announce another season soon.
Shangri-La Frontier Makes VRMMOs Feel Fun Again
Shangri-La Frontier is a really enjoyable take on the classic ‘power fantasy’ storyline. The story centers around Rakuro Hizutome, a gamer who’s become skilled at playing incredibly difficult and often unfair video games. After playing through a string of frustrating titles, he decides to try Shangri-La Frontier, a well-made MMO, and quickly becomes hooked. Playing as his avatar, Sunraku, he tackles tough challenges within the game, only to find they aren’t as difficult as he anticipated.
The anime Shangri-La Frontier makes it clear from the start that it prioritizes entertainment over a deeply serious plot, judging by the main character’s appearance. However, Sunraku isn’t a pushover – he frequently defeats enemies much stronger than himself, all while seemingly enjoying the challenge. He even extends his competitive spirit to other games to stay at the top. While 50 episodes is a commitment, there’s still time to dive in before the season ends.
The Rising of the Shield Hero Proves The Tank Is The Best Class
In Shield Hero, Naofumi Iwatani is an ordinary young man unexpectedly transported to another world and tasked with saving it – but he’s only given a shield for protection. Unable to wield other weapons, he’s initially at a disadvantage. After being falsely accused of a crime by the kingdom that summoned him, Naofumi works to unlock the full potential of his shield and become a true hero.
Initially ostracized, Naofumi steadily grows into the most skilled and ultimately the strongest character in the series. While summoned alongside three other heroes, his strategic thinking gives him a distinct advantage in combat. With the help of his capable companions, Naofumi’s party frequently handles missions that are beyond the reach of others.

Knight’s & Magic Is As Much Fantasy As Mecha
Despite being a fantasy series, Knight’s & Magic isn’t widely discussed even among fans of the isekai genre. The story uniquely blends fantasy elements with mecha, giant monsters (kaiju), and epic battles between them. It follows Ernesti Echevalier, a former programmer who was reborn into this world with a single goal: to create his dream mech.
I always enjoyed watching this show because it really lets you imagine what it would be like to pilot a giant robot. The main character, Ernesti, is constantly working on and upgrading his mecha, then putting them to the test in some pretty intense battles – though he’s such a skilled pilot and engineer that he usually handles everything with ease. It’s a shame it only lasted 12 episodes, but honestly, that makes it ideal for a weekend binge!
The Eminence in Shadow Shows The Most Elaborate Game Ever
I recently watched The Eminence in Shadow, and it’s surprisingly self-aware about how over-the-top it is. The story centers around Cid Kagenou, a guy who wants to become incredibly strong and secretly control the world. He creates a group called Shadow Garden to fight what he thinks is a made-up evil organization, the Cult of Diablos. The funny thing is, everyone else quickly figures out the Cult is actually, genuinely real – but Cid remains convinced he invented them.
At first glance, Eminence in Shadow appears to be a comedy about a clueless main character. However, the protagonist, Cid, is actually incredibly powerful and wins fights without even realizing how dangerous things are. The series has become quite popular, spawning two seasons and a movie, proving it resonates with a particular group of viewers.
Goblin Slayer Takes Power Fantasy to Darker Places
Some viewers question whether Goblin Slayer‘s difficulties fighting enemies disqualify it as a power fantasy, but that’s misleading. Goblin Slayer absolutely delivers on that trope. The story centers around a character relentlessly hunting goblins, dedicated to wiping them out completely, which is a core element of the power fantasy genre.
He’s essentially become a highly skilled combatant, like Batman, proficient in both hand-to-hand fighting and creating elaborate traps and tools to deal with hordes of enemies. His dedication and ingenuity have led to innovative attacks that even experienced adventurers might not consider. Although popular, the anime Goblin Slayer only has two seasons, making it easily binge-watchable.
Wise Man’s Grandchild Sees Its Lead Elevating His Friends
Wise Man’s Grandchild is a fun story about a boy named Shin Wolford who was raised by the powerful mage Merlin. After years of training, Shin starts high school, but because he doesn’t know what’s considered normal, his amazing skills cause all sorts of unexpected and humorous situations.
Shin doesn’t hoard his amazing abilities; instead, he quickly trains his friends, making them incredibly powerful. He’s so strong that even the series’ villain, Olivier, struggles to keep up, and Shin’s allies effortlessly defeat Olivier’s creatures, surpassing even the military’s capabilities. Wise Man’s Grandchild is a light and enjoyable series perfect for a weekend binge.
The Hero Is Overpowered But Overly Cautious Is Perfect For Every Over-Prepared Gamer
The Hero Is Overpowered But Overly Cautious is a hilarious parody aimed at fans of the genre. The story follows Seiya Ryuuguuin, who’s brought to the world of Gaeabrande by a goddess named Ristarte. She needs him to defeat the Demon Lord, but Seiya has a strange quirk: he’s incredibly powerful, yet he overprepares for every battle, even against the weakest enemies, and refuses to fight without doing so.
Seiya perfectly embodies the RPG player who hoards every item ‘just in case,’ and his need to control every battle creates some funny situations. Plus, with only twelve episodes, it’s a quick and satisfying watch, concluding with a good ending that isn’t left unresolved.
Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy- Forces Its Hero To Battle A Goddess
I’m really getting into Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy! It kicks off with the main character, Makoto, getting completely rejected by the goddess of this new world he’s in, which immediately sets him up for a tough time. But here’s the cool part – he ends up being ridiculously powerful, so a lot of the fun comes from just watching him handle everything. Plus, he’s actually building his own country inside a pocket dimension! It’s got all the ingredients for a classic power fantasy, and honestly, it delivers!
While the show hints at the larger mysteries and how Makoto will eventually return home, you don’t need to focus on those details right away. It’s enjoyable to simply watch Makoto discover and develop new abilities, such as learning a new spell. Although Season 2 of Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy finished airing in 2024, a release date for the announced third season hasn’t been confirmed yet.
7th Prince Is One of Crunchyroll’s Top-Rated Reincarnation Fantasy Anime
The anime 7th Prince (originally titled I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability) is a classic example of a power fantasy. The story, spanning two seasons and 24 episodes, begins with a mage who is defeated in battle and then reborn as Lloyd de Saloum, the seventh prince of a kingdom. Discovering he’s much more magically gifted in this new life, Lloyd dedicates himself to becoming incredibly powerful.
The series 7th Prince starts off incredibly over-the-top: the main character finds a secret library, defeats a demon, learns its strongest spell, and then turns it into a cute pet. But even that isn’t enough action for him! The only real reason to watch 7th Prince is to see the protagonist, Lloyd, effortlessly handle any challenge thrown his way.
