Soldier Boy’s Fate & How It Sets Up The Boys Season 5’s MacGuffin Explained By Eric Kripke

Okay, so I just finished episode 2 of The Boys Season 5, “Teenage Kix,” and wow! Soldier Boy is back, and it’s a huge deal. Eric Kripke, the showrunner, has explained how what happens with Soldier Boy in this episode is actually going to set up everything else we see this season. Seriously, it’s a key moment!

Okay, so Homelander brought Soldier Boy back to life to go after Butcher, but it seriously backfired! Soldier Boy ended up getting hit with this virus that’s supposed to kill supes, and we thought it had worked – he went down and they put him in a body bag. But the end of the latest episode? Total shocker! He just sits up inside the bag! It’s crazy and makes you wonder what’s going to happen next.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that Soldier Boy did survive the deadly virus. He explained that Soldier Boy’s immunity is key to the season’s main plot – a mysterious object both Homelander and the Boys will be desperately trying to find. Here’s what Kripke had to say:

It’s confirmed: Soldier Boy isn’t dead. The reason he’s unaffected by the virus is actually key to the season’s main plot. This changes everything, creating a desperate scramble to obtain whatever protects him. If Homelander gets it, there’s no hope. If The Boys get it, they might be able to save the people they care about. Everyone is now fighting for survival, and this struggle drives the entire season. The big question is: will anyone make it through this war, and this virus?

I’m so hyped for season 5 of The Boys! The trailers really suggest Homelander is on a desperate hunt for V1 – that’s the very first version of Compound V Vought ever created. It seems like this V1 could potentially make him immortal, and I think it’s going to be the big thing everyone’s after this season. It also explains Soldier Boy’s incredible resilience! Knowing he’s one of Vought’s earliest supes, it totally makes sense he was given V1, and that’s why he was able to survive that virus while the younger supes, the Teenage Kix, couldn’t. Kripke is dropping some serious hints, and I’m here for it!

If Homelander gets V1 and injects it into himself, he’ll likely become unbeatable, as it would make him immune to the virus. But beyond stopping Homelander, the creator, Eric Kripke, suggests V1 could also protect Starlight (Annie January), Kimiko, and Butcher from the virus, even though they all have Compound V in their systems. Butcher is already dying from a brain tumor, but Starlight and Kimiko could have a chance at a future if they survive and gain immunity from V1.

V1 introduces a fascinating new dynamic: it will likely worsen Homelander’s already existing insecurities by revealing he doesn’t have the strongest form of Compound V. This insecurity could be just as powerful a motivator in the search for the MacGuffin as any strategic need to protect himself.

Season 5 of The Boys will conclude the main storyline that began in 2019, but it’s also laying the groundwork for the upcoming prequel series, Vought Rising. This new show will focus on Soldier Boy in the 1950s and explore the origins of Vought. Creator Eric Kripke has said Vought Rising, slated for release in 2027, will delve into the first version of Compound V—known as V1—explaining why it was discontinued and how it impacted Soldier Boy’s life at that time.

Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), and Frenchie (Tomer Capone) – other key members of the cast of The Boys – are also expected to join the hunt for V1. Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) will likely be heavily involved too, as V1 could significantly impact her plans and ambition for power.

The Boys releases new episodes Wednesdays on Prime Video.
