As a movie buff who has spent countless hours immersed in the silver screen, I must say this year’s National Film Registry selections have left me quite ecstatic! From classics like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Dirty Dancing” to modern masterpieces such as “The Social Network,” it’s a testament to the diversity and richness of our cinematic history.
2010’s Facebook drama “The Social Network” by David Fincher, the 1974 indie horror classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, and the romantic tale set in the Catskills, “Dirty Dancing” starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, have been chosen for preservation by the National Film Registry.
Every year, the Librarian of Congress selects 25 movies that are at least a decade old and deemed important culturally, historically, or artistically. This year, over 6,700 films suggested by the public were up for evaluation.
2024 saw additional films added to the National Film Registry. These include “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan” (1982), a sci-fi sequel; “My Own Private Idaho” (1991), a drama by Gus Van Sant featuring River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves; the family adventure “Spy Kids” from 2001; the Coen brothers’ Western “No Country for Old Men” from 2007; and Eddie Murphy’s debut film on the registry, the 1984 action comedy “Beverly Hills Cop.
This year’s addition increases the tally of movies in our archive to 900, which makes up only a tiny fraction of the massive 2 million films we have in our library. The rest are safeguarded through partnerships with copyright owners and other film archives.
The Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, stated that films mirror our country’s history and culture and should be preserved in our national library for future generations. She emphasized this as a collaborative endeavor within the film community, aiming to safeguard our cinematic legacy.
On December 18 at 8 PM Eastern Time, Turner Classic Movies will air a special television program to showcase a collection of films added to their registry this year. Hayden will participate in the discussion alongside TCM host and film historian Jacqueline Stewart, who serves as chair of the National Film Preservation Board, about the chosen lineup.
“The National Film Registry now includes 900 titles, and what’s remarkable to me is that every year when the board talks about films and their significance, we find new titles to consider. The wealth of American film history is sometimes rather overwhelming, and people often wonder: how do you recommend this film or that film?” Stewart said. “It’s through a lot of research, conversation and discussion, and it’s through a commitment to showing the true diversity of filmmaking. I’m thrilled that we recognize student films and independent films, animation, documentary and experimental works, as well as feature length narrative drama, comedy, horror and science fiction on the registry this year.”
The film ‘The Social Network,’ featuring Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, has grown even more relevant over the past 15 years. However, its Oscar-winning writer Aaron Sorkin shared with the Library of Congress that he didn’t initially understand he was making a movie significant to the digital era.
To me, it seemed like an engaging courtroom drama,” Sorkin stated. “However, I didn’t realize it would turn out to be so much more when I initially started.
The president of NATO (Not the Atlantic Treaty Organization, but the National Association of Theatre Owners), Michael O’Leary, who is part of the National Film Preservation Board’s team at the library, stated, “For over a hundred years, people from all walks of life in America have been drawn to cinemas to witness the enchantment of an exceptional film on the large screen. This list serves as a tribute to this heritage and is not merely a festivity of movies as a creative medium; it’s an acknowledgement of an industry that has consistently come together to narrate stories and bring audiences closer for future generations.
