A number of actors from the DC SnyderVerse are coming back together for a new, exciting reboot of the franchise. For ten years, from 2013 to 2023, Warner Bros. developed a connected DC universe – many fans called it the SnyderVerse – guided by the vision of director Zack Snyder, known for films like 300 and Watchmen. This introduced a new generation of actors to iconic superhero roles, including Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot, all within a shared comicbook movie storyline designed to rival the MCU.
Despite not succeeding, this initiative eventually led to the development of James Gunn’s DCU. However, it didn’t prevent the actors involved from building relationships that would last even after the superhero franchise ended. Notably, Henry Cavill, who previously played Superman, will be reuniting with his Highlander co-star Jeremy Irons in the upcoming reboot.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Irons will appear in the upcoming Highlander movie. The 77-year-old actor will portray a key villain, facing off against Cavill’s character, who is the film’s hero based in the Scottish Highlands.
Irons had previously portrayed Alfred Pennyworth, the trusted butler of Batman, within Zack Snyder’s DC movie series. He acted with Cavill in a number of DC films, such as Batman v Superman and Justice League.
The two actors who starred in the SnyderVerse last collaborated on Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2023. This was a lengthy, four-hour reimagining of the original Justice League movie.
The upcoming film isn’t the only time the SnyderVerse cast will be together again. Henry Cavill and Jeremy Irons will be joined by Russell Crowe, who famously portrayed Superman’s Kryptonian father, Jor-El, in Zack Snyder’s 2013 film Man of Steel.
In the Highlander reboot from Amazon MGM, Irons will portray the head of a secret group called The Watchers. Their job is to monitor Earth’s immortals (including Cavill’s Connor MacLeod) and determine how much danger they pose to people.
Highlander is currently in production, and the cast is growing! Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and Russell Crowe are joining Henry Cavill and Jeremy Irons in the new version of the film. The script is being written by Predators writer Michael Finch, and John Wick director Chad Stahelski is set to direct.
Similar to the classic Highlander movies, the upcoming film focuses on a Scottish warrior from the Middle Ages (played by Henry Cavill) who gains the ability to live forever. The release of Highlander is currently planned for either 2027 or 2028.
Will A Full-Fledged SnyderVerse Reunion Ever Happen?
If you enjoyed Zack Snyder’s DC films, this new Highlander reboot might be the next best thing to seeing a complete SnyderVerse project come to life.
In recent years, Warner Bros. has moved past its previous approach to superhero stories, launching the new DCU with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn leading the way. So far, the changes are looking promising.
The three projects launched within the new DCU have all received positive reviews from critics, strengthening Warner Bros.’ resolve to distance itself from its earlier efforts to create a connected universe of films and shows.
So, audiences will have to do with small-scale reunions like this in other franchises entirely.
More team-ups from the SnyderVerse are on the way, including the highly anticipated eleventh Fast & Furious movie. This film will feature several actors who previously worked on DC projects, specifically Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Fast 11 is facing developmental roadblocks, which could push back the release date of this highly anticipated action film and the next chapter in the DCEU.
