When Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End first came out, people loved its fresh idea. The story starts after the big bad guy, the Demon King, was already defeated. This allowed the main character, Frieren, to explore and have new adventures without constantly worrying about an immediate threat. Crunchyroll’s newest mecha anime offers a similar feel, but with a darker tone.
The anime series Snowball Earth premiered on Crunchyroll on April 3, 2026. It’s set in a world under alien attack, where a young hero is humanity’s last hope. While the premise of a gifted protagonist fighting aliens is familiar to many mecha anime, the first episode takes a surprising turn. Instead of a triumphant beginning, it reveals a devastating failure for the hero and hints that those he tried to save may be gone.
Snowball Earth Takes the Tragic Dive That Frieren Avoided
The story of Frieren begins after the hero party has already defeated the Demon King. This lets Frieren travel, learn new magic, and reflect on her past. However, Snowball Earth explores a ‘what if’ scenario: what if the hero party had actually lost the battle? Would Frieren still be able to enjoy a peaceful journey?
Tstuo Yabusame, the main character in Snowball Earth, is incredibly talented, but a small mistake causes his entire plan to fall apart right at the beginning of the anime. When he returns to Earth, he doesn’t find the warm welcome he deserves; instead, the world is covered in snow and ice. Unlike the heroes in Frieren, who were celebrated upon their return, Tetsuo faced a cold and disappointing reality.
Both Frieren and Tetsuo find themselves back in their own worlds after a big battle in the first episode of their anime, but things have changed dramatically. Frieren witnesses the passage of time through the lives and deaths of people, and the evolution of society, prompting her to reflect on the past. Meanwhile, Tetsuo isn’t even sure if there’s a world remaining that needs saving. In a way, Tetsuo’s situation feels more challenging, as he’s left facing an immense problem without the satisfaction of a clear victory.
Snowball Earth Makes Frieren’s Sense of Loss Feel Tame
Both Frieren and Snowball Earth explore themes of loss and grief. In Snowball Earth, Tetsuo experiences a particularly profound grief after losing Yukio, his robot friend. This loss is made even more devastating because it also cuts him off from any remaining connection to humanity. While the loss is personal in both stories, it’s especially impactful for Tetsuo, who is human, as it represents a complete severance from everything he knows.
Both Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Snowball Earth feature characters on journeys of self-discovery, but their motivations differ greatly. Frieren revisits places from her past to better understand human feelings and the relationships she once had, using her travels to come to terms with her history. In contrast, Snowball Earth focuses on a desperate struggle for survival in a harsh, lonely world. While Frieren cherishes her memories, the character Tetsuo only has one meaningful connection to remember: Yukio.
Tetsuo experiences a particularly devastating loss in Snowball Earth because his entire history has been erased. He’s left grieving for a past that’s completely gone, while Frieren has the ability to revisit her memories and find some peace. Tetsuo, however, will always regret not cherishing the people he knew when they were still alive. The world of Frieren continues to move forward due to the Hero Party’s achievements, but in Snowball Earth, life is frozen as simply surviving becomes the biggest challenge.
Wow, “Snowball Earth” really throws everything at you! It completely strips away everything the main character knows and leaves him feeling totally isolated. Seriously, imagine losing not just a friend, but your whole life – that’s what Tetsuo’s facing, and all he has left is sheer determination to keep going. What’s even more impactful is that his memories aren’t a source of comfort; they’re actually painful reminders of what he’s lost, making him incredibly fragile. The story takes those memories and completely reshapes them into a narrative brimming with loss that you can’t undo.
