Michael Che, one of the hosts of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, started the segment early this week by criticizing President Donald Trump and the government. He spoke out about recent cuts to food stamp hours just before tonight’s show aired.
Che recently shared news on Instagram about a concerning situation: the government shutdown has caused funding for November’s SNAP benefits to run out. The USDA announced that the roughly $8 to $9 billion needed to cover these benefits is unavailable, putting over 40 million Americans at risk of losing their assistance starting November 1, 2025.
Che shared a personal story in his post, explaining that he grew up relying on food stamps. Seeing benefits cut for those in need resonated deeply with him. He strongly criticized the recent SNAP freeze, stating, “I grew up using food stamps, and it wasn’t easy.” He recalled the embarrassment of using them as a child, waiting for friends to leave the store so they wouldn’t see him pay, and emphasized that it wasn’t a glamorous experience.
The SNL comedian rightfully called out people who were celebrating recent news, and strongly argued that we should stop criticizing people simply trying to get by. He pointed out that the U.S. has historically benefited from those who exploit loopholes, but when poor people, particularly Black individuals, find ways to improve their situation, they face harsher judgment. He urged everyone to set aside political disagreements and avoid personal attacks against those struggling to feed their families.
So, I was reading about this, and even though Trump said last night – October 31st, as of this report – that he was happy to have provided the money and mentioned helping other groups financially, it turns out two federal judges actually decided the administration had to use that $6 billion that was already earmarked.
Tune in to see Che and Colin Jost’s Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live this November 1st at 11:30 PM Eastern Time and 8:30 PM Pacific Time.
