‘SNL’ Cold Open Features the Dana Carvey’s Church Lady Interviewing Matt Gaetz and Hunter Biden

As a cinephile who has been following Saturday Night Live since its inception, I must say that this sketch featuring Dana Carvey as the Church Lady was a delightful throwback to the good old days. The parade of “sinners” representing the “most Satanic year in history” added a touch of humor and political satire that only SNL can deliver so well.

Dana Carvey’s character, Church Lady, started “Saturday Night Live” with a talk show that had guests portraying infamous figures from the “most devilish year on record”. Sarah Sherman took on the role of Matt Gaetz, David Spade played Hunter Biden, and Marcello Hernandez was baseball free agent Juan Soto.

“Are you okay, Matt? You look a little surprised to be here,” Carvey says.

“No, this is just how my face is,” Gaetz’ Sherman replies.

“You better repent Matt. There’s 17 days left to Christmas,” says the Church Lady.

“You had me at 17!” says Gaetz.

Later on, the Church Lady was paid a visit by David Spade, portraying Hunter Biden, who greeted her cheerfully, “Hello Church Lady! It’s been a while since my last visit. I’ve been keeping a low profile recently.

The Church Lady remarks that some folks aren’t pleased with your pardon,” she says. “However, much like Trump, I believe they targeted me specifically due to who I am and the supposedly illicit deeds associated with my family name,” Spade replies.

“Well, isn’t that special!” the Church Lady exclaims.

Following Soto’s visit, I joined Carvey and the Church Chat singers offstage, our voices echoing with a playful rendition of “Satan seemed to have a prosperous year!
