‘SNL’ Cold Open Features Sarah Sherman as Rachel Maddow on the LA Wildfires, the TikTok Ban and Trump

Sarah Sherman kicked off the initial “Saturday Night Live” episode of 2025 by embodying political commentator Rachel Maddow in a sketch. In this segment, Maddow presided over an MSNBC panel, where Marcello Hernandez appeared as Ari Melber, Ego Nwodim took on the role of Joy Reed, Heidi Gardner played Stephanie Ruhle, and Andrew Dismukes portrayed Chris Hayes.

The speakers launched into a conversation covering several topics, including the upcoming inauguration, the tragic wildfires currently ravaging Los Angeles, and the recent ban on TikTok.

Hello there, and a warm welcome to MSNBC! I’m Rachel Maddow, and if you have grown-up, intellectual daughters who happen to be lesbians, well, it might be time to keep them out of sight tonight as I’ll be returning to your screens for our exceptional coverage during the inauguration weekend. – Sherman’s statement, rephrased

Before the panelists had a chance to delve into the day’s subjects, Sherman interrupted, announcing, “There’s some fresh news. It seems Trump has unexpectedly declared to the media that he wants to ‘quote’ Trade Connecticut.

She continued by stating, “Apologies, Ari. We’re receiving urgent news: Trump apparently told wildfire victims that ‘Arnold Palmer had some of the longest drives in American history.’ It seems this is his tactic to divert our conversation away from discussing disaster relief or climate change impacts.

During the sketch, James Austin Johnson pops up portraying President Donald Trump for a friendly discussion on the issue of the TikTok ban.

Indeed, TikTok has grown on us, Johnson admits. ‘Aren’t we fond of TikTok?’ he queries. Previously, we weren’t particularly keen on it, but it played a significant role in my election, so now we appreciate it. The ‘Riz’ term is another favorite, isn’t it? They’re attempting to eliminate it, which is unfortunate. They want them gone from our reach. We shop at Costco, you know. Boom! And we’re joining the ‘Get Ready with me’ series. That should be fun. Do you remember the Ice Bucket Challenge? We adored the Ice Bucket challenge. By the way, we might need to move over to Reels with Mark Zuckerberg. I find him more likable now. Zuck seems to have updated his hairstyle and image, making him appear cooler. Of course, he’ll attend my inauguration, which will take place indoors due to the large number of attendees. We’re eagerly anticipating our inauguration on Martin Luther King Day. I enjoy sharing this day with everyone. We’re also thrilled about my latest cabinet pick, George Santos.

Bowen Yang made an appearance in the sketch role of the disgraced ex-U.S. Congressman. “I’m thrilled to be joining Trump’s administration as the Secretary of Verification and Ambassador to Sephora,” he declared. “I find myself moving from politician to cameo, and potentially on to incarceration. However, I eagerly anticipate my new position starting on Monday. This month has been particularly challenging for me due to the loss of Jimmy Carter. He was like a father figure to me, having had such a profound impact on my life.” And now, I must apologize, as I’m running late for a date with my partner, Luigi Mangione.

This coming New Year’s first episode will be hosted by comedian Dave Chappelle, who is appearing for his fourth time on this cherished sketch comedy program. Meanwhile, the up-and-coming rap artist GloRilla will be gracing the stage of “SNL” as the musical performer, marking her initial appearance on this renowned show.
