It’s been a while since they stopped appearing, but the beloved Smurfs have returned! Paramount Pictures has revealed the complete trailer for their upcoming musical movie titled “Smurfs,” boasting an impressive ensemble cast, with Rihanna lending her voice to the character Smurfette.
Apart from lending her voice, Rihanna is involved in the production of the animated film by Paramount Animation. Additionally, she has written unique tunes for this motion picture.
In 2023, during a fun moment at the yearly CinemaCon event, Rihanna playfully admitted that she had attempted to secure the role of Papa Smurf, but it didn’t pan out.
The movie titled “Smurfs” will explore themes related to identity within the Smurf community. Chris Miller and Matt Landon are the film’s directors, with Pam Brady penning the script. A star-studded voice cast includes Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, Daniel Levy, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Hannah Waddingham, Xolo Maridueña, James Corden, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Kurt Russell and John Goodman.
The fresh, musical take on “Smurfs” is based on Sony Pictures’ film series adaptation of this legendary character. In these live-action/CG blended films, Neil Patrick Harris and Katy Perry were the stars. The Smurfs, who are small, blue creatures, come from the comic book world created by Belgian artist Peyo.
As a die-hard fan, I’d say that Peyo’s comics were our foundation, both in terms of story and visual appeal. Then, we sought ways to expand upon this within those boundaries. The Smurfs village, for instance, is this enigmatic, magical realm. We could subtly alter it or delve deeper into its history. Questions like ‘How did they arrive there?’ and ‘Why are they there?’ were some of the thoughts I shared at last year’s Annecy Animation Festival. The “Smurfs” movie will hit theaters on July 18.
