The follow-up game to the well-known MOBA, SMITE 2, debuted in Early Access last August. Prior to now, it was a paid game, where we had to pay for access to the closed alpha at a cost of $29.99 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. Initially, this was just a temporary phase meant to control the number of players during the early stages of development. Now, we’ve learned that it will transition to a free-to-play model.

  1. We won’t have to wait long, as SMITE 2 will become a free-to-play game with microtransactions on January 14th of this year, which is next Tuesday. Simultaneously, the game will move from the alpha phase to the beta stage.
  2. On that day, the game will be available for free download for both PC users and owners of Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5.

On January 14th, Aladdin will debut as a fresh hero in SMITE 2, increasing the roster to a total of 45 characters. Furthermore, two new game modes, Joust and Duel, will make their appearance, while testing for the upcoming Assault mode (third version) will kick off.

The early-access, paid version of SMITE 2 on Steam has generated a mix of opinions, with only 60% of total player reviews being favorable. However, if we look at reviews from just the past month, 70% have been positive, suggesting that users are generally pleased with the game’s evolution. It will be interesting to see if this positive trend continues once SMITE 2 transitions to a free-to-play model.
