For a number of years, a film adaptation of the video game Sleeping Dogs had been in development, but it seems that progress on the project has come to a halt. Initially, Donnie Yen (known for his roles in Ip Man, John Wick, and Rogue One) was set to star as the lead character, however, he recently confirmed that the forward momentum required to produce the film has slowed down significantly.
For quite some time and with a considerable amount of effort, I collaborated extensively with these producers, even putting up some of my own funds to secure the drafts and certain rights. After waiting patiently for years, I’m eager to move forward with this project. I have so many ideas swirling in my mind, but unfortunately… well, you know how Hollywood can be, right? Despite investing numerous years into it, things didn’t turn out as planned.
Yen failed to offer further details regarding the fate of the “Sleeping Dogs” film, a situation that often occurs when Hollywood productions encounter difficulties during production or development stages, leading them to be either cancelled or stuck in a phase known as “development hell.” These films may never reach the screen for various reasons.
2021 saw Yen being informed by his production partners about upcoming filming, scheduled for 2022. However, as we all know, those plans didn’t materialize.
Although it seems unlikely that Yen’s “Sleeping Dogs” movie will be released, you might consider watching the upcoming 2024 film “Sleeping Dogs,” starring Russell Crowe, or the 1977 movie titled “Sleeping Dogs” featuring Sam Neill. Alternatively, for a different perspective, you could watch Bobcat Goldthwait’s 2006 movie called “Sleeping Dogs Lie,” which revolves around the theme of bestiality.
In the initial Sleeping Dogs video game, players assumed the role of Wei Shen, a secret agent posing as a criminal, who was sent to penetrate the criminal Triad organizations active in Hong Kong, collecting proof about their numerous illicit dealings.
2012’s Sleeping Dogs gained positive reviews from critics and fans alike, but it failed to spawn a series. A spin-off titled Triad Wars was discontinued during its testing phase, and the developers, United Front Games, ceased operations in 2016. However, a comprehensive version of Sleeping Dogs, known as the Definitive Edition, was launched in 2014.
