Skyrim’s massive RP server that replaces NPCs with players just broke a new record

Since its release 15 years ago, Skyrim has been enhanced by countless mods. Now, a huge new roleplaying server is taking the 2011 game to a completely new level.

Keizaal Online has become incredibly popular, recently reaching 600 players at the same time. This surge in popularity has attracted the attention of major streamers and showcases the game’s unique, player-focused roleplaying experience within the world of Tamriel.

Even though the game has a huge number of players and is all over social media, the lead developer, Oren, wants everyone to understand it’s not a typical massively multiplayer online game.

Players are free to make their own stories

Oren explained that Keizaal Online isn’t about replaying the original Skyrim storyline. Instead, it’s focused on creating a role-playing experience. The team doesn’t see it as competition for games like The Elder Scrolls Online, but rather as something similar to the popular roleplaying servers for GTA V, known as FiveM.

This server offers a truly immersive experience by making one major change: all the usual characters you’d find in the game – like townspeople and guards – have been replaced with real players. So, if you encounter a Nord in a tavern or a guard at the city gates, you’re interacting with another person, not a computer-controlled character.

Oren explained they focused on building emotional depth to create a realistic role-playing server. A key part of this is player-driven trading – players will exchange items with each other, and there won’t be any shopkeepers or NPCs to buy or sell from, putting a strong emphasis on the game’s economy.

The Keizaal team designed their server to be very easy for new players to pick up, especially those who might be hesitant about more complex roleplaying experiences.

While games like GTA V focus on constantly earning money for expensive items, Skyrim lets you simply live and find your place in the world. The game encourages you to take on a humble role – like a miner, blacksmith, or farmer – and naturally become part of the community.

With the server becoming increasingly popular, the developers are planning a large update for the future. This update will significantly expand what players can do with their professions, including adding priest roles that will feature abilities to revive players and deal with diseases.

Even though this is the developer’s first time creating a Skyrim mod, they’ve managed to create a completely fresh way to play the game. And as the mod expands, a new, player-driven economy is starting to thrive in the world of Tamriel.
