The Energon Universe Crossovers, Explained
Skybound’s Ben Abernathy announced the anniversary of the Energon Universe, excitedly welcoming the characters from the new M.A.S.K. series. He praised artist Tom Reilly and colorist Adriano Lucas, calling their collaboration ‘absolute magic!’
Fans of the Energon Universe have become used to seeing characters and storylines from Void Rivals, Transformers, and G.I. Joe connect. Now, the addition of characters from M.A.S.K. will finally bring them together with another beloved ’80s franchise – something fans and creators have been hoping for years. M.A.S.K. quickly gained popularity with younger audiences and fans of the original toys.
Despite only lasting two seasons, the animated series M.A.S.K. remains a popular part of pop culture and has seen several attempts at a revival. In 2015, Hasbro announced plans for a shared cinematic universe including M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe, Rom, Micronauts, and Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light – a project that ultimately didn’t happen. However, that wasn’t the last time people tried to bring M.A.S.K. back.
A new live-action M.A.S.K. movie was announced in 2017, but there haven’t been many updates since. Although Chris Bremner, who wrote Bad Boys for Life and The Man from Toronto, was brought on as the screenwriter in 2020, the project appears to have stalled.
Skybound Entertainment is launching a series of connected variant covers, starting with M.A.S.K. #1 on June 3rd.
