Tubi recently shared a sneak peek of “Hemet, or the Lady Avoids Tea,” a low-cost horror comedy with a satirical twist, produced by BayView Entertainment – the team known for the subterranean horror sensation “Skinamarink.

In a unique twist on the horror genre, “Hemet, or the Landlady Who Doesn’t Drink Tea”, incorporates aspects of political satire, focusing on themes of power and resistance. The main plotline is summarized as, “A ruthless landlady exerts her dominance over her tenants during a pandemic, driving them to distrust and fear one another, resulting in a lethal network of suspicion.

The movie titled ‘Hemet, or the Landlady Doesn’t Drink Tea,’ directed by Tony Olmos (known for ‘Continuance’ and ‘South of 8’), features a screenplay by Brian Patrick Butler (‘Friend of the World’). In this film, Brian also plays the main character, a fascist landlady named Liz Topham-Myrtle. The cast also includes Kimberly Weinberger as Rosie Perkins, a tenant who finds herself in a scheme to seize control of the apartment building from Liz; Aimee La Joie as Liz’s daughter, Kate Myrtle; Randy Davison as Sheriff Hunting; and Merrick McCartha and Matthew Rhodes as tenants Martin and Gary. This horror production, budgeted at $29,000, is a collaboration between Charybdis Pictures and Rosewood Five.

The video highlights the initial conversation between Martin (played by McCartha) and Gary (portrayed by Rhodes) in “Hemet, or the Landlady Doesn’t Drink Tea”. In this discussion, they share details about their respective living conditions, all under Liz’s (Butler’s character) supervision.

In February 2024, the horror-comedy was shown at the 13th Oceanside International Film Festival, earning Butler nominations for Best Actor (Lead Role), Best Editing (Feature), and Best Screenplay (Feature). At the San Diego Film Awards, “Hemet, or the Landlady Doesn’t Drink Tea” took home the award for Best Makeup/Hair in a Narrative Feature Film.

“Hemet, or the Landlady Don’t Drink Tea” drops on Tubi on Jan. 27.
