Wow, what a morning for Ryan Coogler! As the Oscar nominations were announced, his film, Sinners, absolutely dominated, snagging a stunning 16 nominations. That’s a new record, beating out classics like Titanic, All About Eve, and even La La Land, which all held the previous record of 14. It’s clearly the frontrunner this year, with One Battle After Another coming in second with 13 nods. And honestly, Warner Bros. Discovery must be thrilled! What’s really impressive is that Sinners would have still broken the record even without the new Achievement in Casting category – they’re nominated in every single technical field, from editing and costumes to visual effects, score, and production design. It’s a huge win for the film and everyone involved.
Costume designer Ruth E. Carter achieved a historic milestone with her fifth Oscar nomination, making her the most-nominated Black woman in any category. She previously won Oscars for both Black Panther films. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw also broke ground as the first woman of color to be nominated in her category. The team behind Sinners is making waves, with Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, and Wunmi Mosaku all receiving their first acting nominations. Ryan Coogler earned his first Best Director nomination, and his wife, Zinzi Coogler, shares a Best Picture nomination as a co-producer. Hopefully, the Sinners team is celebrating far away from Remmick!
