Simon Helberg Plays “Maladjusted Genius” In AMC’s The Audacity

Simon Helberg, known for his role as Howard Wolowitz on The Big Bang Theory, is taking on another character who’s a bit of an oddball genius in his new show, The Audacity. This darkly funny AMC series is set in Silicon Valley and explores the competitive world of tech billionaires and their sometimes overblown egos.

At a recent event during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, actor Simon Helberg discussed his new character, Martin Phister. He explained that Phister is a once-brilliant young mind who’s now grown up and fixated on creating the perfect AI friend. Helberg also suggested that Phister is a loner and is having a difficult time raising his teenage daughter. You can hear what Helberg had to say below:

My character, Martin, is a brilliant but socially awkward man, much like many people in Silicon Valley. He was a prodigy, entering Stanford at fifteen and quickly finding success in the tech world. Now, he dedicates all his time to building an AI designed to help troubled teens, ironically while neglecting his own teenage daughter and the people around him. He’s largely withdrawn from the world, and the story explores the loneliness felt by all the characters as they attempt to connect with each other – often relying on technology, which presents its own challenges.

Martin from The Audacity shares some similarities with Howard Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory, particularly in the show’s early seasons before Howard’s relationship with Bernadette. Both characters are highly intelligent but struggle with social interactions and often feel isolated.

Martin, now a father and successful tech entrepreneur, is in a different place in his life than Howard was when they first met. Despite this, both men share some fundamental similarities and seem to struggle with forming meaningful connections, often approaching things in unhelpful ways.

Simon Helberg is joined by a talented cast including Billy Magnussen, Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Goldberg, Lucy Punch, Rob Corddry, Meaghan Rath, Paul Adelstein, Everett Blunck, Thailey Roberge, and Ava Marie Telek. Randall Park will make a guest appearance as the CFO of a data mining company. AMC has released initial photos of Helberg and the cast, which you can view below.

Jonathan Glatzer, an Emmy-winning producer and writer known for shows like HBO’s Succession and AMC’s Better Call Saul, created The Audacity. Like Succession, the show centers on the lives of very wealthy people competing with each other, which should help it attract viewers.

Robert Glatzer is the creative force behind the series, serving as both showrunner and writer, and also an executive producer. He’s working alongside Gina Mingacci, an executive producer known for her work on AMC’s Killing Eve. The show will have eight episodes, starting with the premiere on April 12th on AMC and AMC+. New episodes will be released each week.

I’ve been seeing Simon Helberg pop up everywhere since The Big Bang Theory wrapped up in 2019, which is awesome! It’s been fun to hear his voice as Howard again on Young Sheldon, and I really enjoyed seeing him team up with Melissa Rauch on Night Court. Plus, he’s been a regular on American Dad! and had a great role in Peacock’s Poker Face. He’s definitely been keeping busy!
