Silent Hill producer says AI could never make Silent Hill f

Motoi Okamoto, a producer on the Silent Hill series, believes AI can’t match the innovative and daring creative choices that defined the game Silent Hill f.

These remarks follow a statement from Hideo Kojima, the creator of Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, who believes that AI will become a collaborative tool for creators, rather than a competitor.

Kojima sees AI as a way to boost creativity, not take over from artists, and believes it has a lot of promise. However, Okamoto is more skeptical, questioning whether AI can truly produce original work.

Silent Hill producer weighs in on AI

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Okamoto believes it would be challenging for AI to successfully recreate games that drastically differ from existing titles in the series, using Silent Hill f as an example. The comments were translated by Automaton.

While AI could potentially create a new installment in the Silent Hill series, it wouldn’t be capable of the creative risks needed for truly innovative changes – like setting a game in Japan or bringing in a writer like Ryukishi07. Those kinds of bold decisions require human creativity.

Games like Silent Hill f, which drastically break from established formulas, are less likely to be replaced by AI. While AI could potentially create proposals for a new Silent Hill sequel, it wouldn’t be able to come up with bold creative decisions like setting a game in Japan or bringing in a specific artist like Ryukishi07.

Okamoto, the producer in charge of bringing back the Silent Hill series, is currently working on several projects including Silent Hill f, Silent Hill: Townfall, and a remake of Silent Hill 2. His views highlight a growing discussion within the gaming industry about whether artificial intelligence can genuinely inspire creative work, especially as more companies try using AI for tasks like writing, creating art, and designing game worlds.

Although AI can help developers work faster, Okamoto’s points highlight a rising feeling that human creativity and willingness to take risks are still essential – particularly for game series like Silent Hill that constantly need fresh, innovative ideas.
