I’m so excited Silent Hill f is finally here! As a long-time fan, it’s awesome to see the series exploring its roots in Japan, and it definitely feels like classic Silent Hill. I ran into my first puzzle pretty quickly – it’s this altar thing, and honestly, it had me stuck! So, I figured I’d share how I solved the Silent Hill f altar puzzle, just in case anyone else is having trouble. Hopefully, this helps!
Silent Hill f – altar puzzle guide
This initial puzzle is simpler than others you’ll find later on, such as the shrine vault or the locker codes in Silent Hill. However, you might still get stuck if you miss a crucial clue.
When you get to the altar, you’ll see five stands holding five different items, often called offerings. It might seem like you need to arrange them in a certain order, but a poem nearby doesn’t make it easy to figure out. These offerings consist of a vase, a paper fan, and three animals – a bird, a mouse, and a fish – each wrapped for a special ceremony.
The alter poem, as confusing as it is, reads:
Altar
Thy restless heart betrays thee as unfit for this auspicious day.
Thou must first pay respect to the gods and the spirit of thine ancestors.
A restless heart leads to a corrupt soul.
Only through sufficient offerings laid upon many stands may thy soul be cleaned.
Trying to solve this puzzle using only the poem won’t be very helpful – it’s too vague. The solution lies in examining the objects themselves. When you interact with each object, you’ll discover you can rotate them. As you rotate each one, look for a symbol that matches one of the symbols on the altar stands.
Just put each item on the altar with the matching symbol. If you’re still having trouble, here’s a clear and simple solution to help you out.

From left to right:
- Fan – front left
- Fish – back left
- Vase – front middle
- Bird – back right
- Mouse – front right

Putting the offerings in the correct order will solve the puzzle and trigger a cutscene, allowing you to continue deeper into the fog world. While exploring, be sure to find all the Omamori and inventory upgrades – they can be easy to miss, but they’ll be a big help if you want to finish Silent Hill f.
