Sigourney Weaver, known for her roles in the hugely popular Alien and Avatar films, recently discussed the lasting impact of both series. The award-winning actress shared her experiences working on these two groundbreaking franchises, noting that each has uniquely changed the landscape of cinema.
Sigourney Weaver says Ripley’s character in Alien ‘was ahead of its time’
While at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, actress Jodie Comer, known for her role in ‘The Defenders,’ shared that no one involved with the 1979 film ‘Alien’ anticipated its lasting influence on cinema.
Sigourney Weaver explained to The Hollywood Reporter that the creators believed viewers wouldn’t anticipate the young woman becoming the hero – the one who ultimately survives. While the decision wasn’t initially intended as a feminist statement, it ended up having that effect.
Sigourney Weaver recently discussed her iconic role as Ripley in Alien, noting that the character felt progressive even at the time of the film’s release. She expressed her fondness for Ripley and was struck by how much of an impact the character has had over the years. Weaver believes Ripley resonated with audiences because she embodies self-reliance and the idea that women don’t need rescuing, adding that she feels women are essential to holding society together.
The acclaimed actress then began working on the Avatar films, which first came out in 2009. The series, starring Sam Worthington, has since released two sequels, and two more are currently being made.
I’ve always been so impressed watching Sigourney Weaver’s journey with the Avatar films, and hearing her talk about it is just lovely. She recently shared how close the cast and crew have become – almost like a family, after working together for twenty years! And she had such wonderful things to say about James Cameron, explaining how he really pioneered the technology used in Avatar to allow actors complete freedom in their performances. It’s amazing to think about the impact he’s had on filmmaking.
Sigourney Weaver praised Cameron for making filmmaking more exciting. She hopes more directors will adopt his approach, believing it creates a more authentic and immersive experience for everyone involved, both the director and the actors.
