Contains a mild spoiler for Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is truly amazing. Consider the movie Avatar: Fire and Ash – James Cameron used CGI to make Sigourney Weaver, who voiced a character, appear as a teenage Na’vi. It’s incredible what he can achieve! For the third Avatar film, Cameron digitally transformed the 72-year-old actress into Kiri, a blue alien. However, in their pursuit of a grand cinematic experience, they overlooked a key aspect of teenage life: romance. Kiri develops a romantic connection with Spider, played by Jack Champion, a human teenager living on Pandora, and they share a kiss. Importantly, Champion was actually a teenager himself – between 14 and 16 years old during filming – so Cameron and Weaver thoughtfully considered this detail.
Weaver told The Hollywood Reporter about how the team handled a kissing scene with a young actor. She clarified she wouldn’t kiss the 14 or 15-year-old actor directly, so they let him choose someone she could kiss instead. She believes a similar process was used to ensure his comfort when she wasn’t filming. Weaver also praised the relationship between Kiri and Spider, calling them a great example of a successful romance despite their differences. She pointed out the significant height difference between her and her co-star – she’s around 6’4″ while he’s about 5’8″ – and how visible it is in the film. As a tall woman herself, she loves that this mismatch is part of their dynamic and feels it works perfectly.
