As a lifelong soccer enthusiast who’s spent countless hours playing the beautiful game, both on and off the field, the announcement of Sloclap’s Rematch has me buzzing like a corner flag in a windstorm! The developer behind Absolver and Sifu is diving headfirst into the world of soccer with this high-action, strategic online multiplayer game, and it couldn’t be more exciting.
It wasn’t at all what I anticipated, but it looks like the upcoming game from Sloclap, known for martial arts games such as Absolver and Sifu, is actually a 5v5 online multiplayer soccer game called Rematch. This was unveiled during The Game Awards. The unique selling point of this game lies in its use of the precise hitbox technology and smooth movements, which were developed for Absolver and Sifu, to create a fast-paced and tactical soccer experience.
The vibrant blue and orange colors, lack of fouls or off-sides, focus on acrobatic plays, vibrant goal explosions, and ability to pass the ball off the wall and ceiling give Rematch strong Rocket League vibes, and I’m all for that. The game features a little more structure than something like Rocket League–each team in Rematch has a set goalie, for example–but FIFA or EA FC this is not. You’re not controlling a whole team and playing by actual soccer rules; you’re playing as a single person and doing your best to look as cool as possible while working alongside four other players.
Have you come across Blue Lock before? This game seems to have a similar feel to it, so let’s hope it manages to deliver on that kind of fantasy.
Prior to The Game Awards, a sneak peek at Rematch revealed insights into the game, highlighting its resemblance to a competitive team-based shooter. It stimulates players to execute impressive moves as a team, specialize in specific roles on the battlefield, and aim and shoot like in a third-person shooter. Much like Rocket League, matches appear to be swift and action-packed. You and your friends line up for a game, play, find yourselves wanting to play one more match, and before you realize it, it’s 3 AM (assuming so, as I haven’t had the chance to try Rematch myself). However, from what I’ve seen, it seems like a game that my friends and I have been eagerly anticipating for several years.
One concern I might have about the game is its handling of the goalie, the role that keeps a player on one side of the field. It seems to me it might not be as engaging as playing as a striker, who can score goals and also defend their own goal. However, during a preview event, Sloclap co-founder Pierre Tarno mentioned to reporters that playing as a goalkeeper feels “really enjoyable” and offers “stronger abilities” than other players, so it’s possible I might be needlessly worried.
According to Tarno, the variety of techniques you employ, your ability to adjust your body to stay close to opponents, and your capability to leap for high balls all contribute to the strategic pleasure of being a goalkeeper. While I won’t delve into the technical aspects, it’s essential to understand how these actions feel and where you position yourself. It’s incredibly rewarding when you prevent an attack because each time you do so, the momentum shifts.
At launch, Rematch will offer more than just 5v5 gameplay, with additional content tailored for different seasons and a few alternative modes as well. This exciting title is scheduled for release on the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC in the summer of 2025.
