As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional storytelling and a soft spot for dark fairy tales, I am absolutely ecstatic about the upcoming release of “The Ugly Stepsister” on Shudder next year! Having grown up on a steady diet of Grimm’s tales, the thought of a sinister twist on Cinderella is nothing short of exhilarating.
Thrilled to bits as a cinephile, I can’t help but share the news that I, for one, will be among the first to witness “The Ugly Stepsister,” AMC Networks’ premium streaming service’s latest acquisition, before it graces the screens at Sundance! This chilling reimagining of the timeless Cinderella tale is sure to leave me on the edge of my seat.
The film, scheduled to debut in the Midnight Section at Park City, has been acquired by Shudder for distribution rights in North America, the UK, and ANZ regions. This movie is also represented by Memento International.
Emilie Blichfeldt’s first directorial venture, titled “The Ugly Stepsister,” is set to make its debut in 2025. This intriguing project stars fresh talent Lea Myren, alongside Thea Sofie Loch Næss from “The Last Kingdom” and Ane Dahl Torp of “The Wave.” The film will be distributed by Shudder.
“Elvira’s Rivalry
Blichfeldt expressed great excitement about presenting ‘The Ugly Stepsister’ at Sundance and eventually to a larger audience, all thanks to an exceptional team. He also mentioned that Shudder’s enthusiasm and faith in the movie makes them an ideal collaborator to share this tale effectively.
The director shared that the unusual take on Cinderella she created was influenced by the Brothers Grimm tale and her personal battles with self-image. She aims to stir feelings of empathy and unease in viewers, encouraging them to reconsider their views on beauty and contemplate their own perceptions and connections to it.
Weaving horror and comedy, the movie boasts a stellar key crew including costume designer Manon Rasmussen (“A Royal Affair,” “Melancholia”), cinematographer Marcel Zyskind (“The Dead Don’t Hurt”), editor Border Olivia Neergaard-Holm (“The Apprentice”), VFX supervisor Peter Hjort (“Triangle of Sadness”) and VFX make up Thomas Foldberg (“Border”).
Emily Gotto, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Production at Shudder, praised the film ‘The Ugly Stepsister’ as a unique reinterpretation of a classic fairy tale with disturbing burlesque body horror elements at their finest. She negotiated the deal for this film with Alexandre Moreau, head of sales at Memento International. Gotto added that Emilie Blichfeldt’s debut feature is an extraordinary achievement and they are proud to present her movie on Shudder later in the year.
This film is created by Maria Ekerhovd in Norway at Mer Film, a company that has worked on “The Innocents,” “War Sailor,” and Joachim Trier’s upcoming project “Sentimental Value.” It also has co-production credits from Lizette Jonjic for Zentropa Sweden (“Another Round”), Mariusz Włodarski for Lava Films in Poland (“The Girl with The Needle,” “Sweat”), Theis Nørgaard for Motor in Denmark (“The Dead Don’t Hurt”), Zefyr and Film i Väst.
