‘Shtisel’ Prequel ‘Kugel’ to Travel Worldwide With Distributor Fremantle, Producer Abot Hameiri, Streamer Izzy and Israeli Network Yes

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the captivating world of Israeli television, I am thrilled to share my thoughts on the upcoming drama series “Kugel.” Having been hooked by the charm and complexity of the characters in “Shtisel,” I eagerly await this prequel that delves deeper into the lives of Nuchem and his daughter Libi.

Powerful entertainment company Fremantle, popular international streaming platform Izzy, production studio Abot Hameiri, and Israeli television network Yes have joined forces for the worldwide distribution of the drama series “Kugel,” which serves as a prequel to the successful show “Shtisel.

Next year, “Kugel” is set to debut on Izzy, captivating viewers who are fond of the main characters from “Shtisel”, specifically Nuchem, played by Sasson Gabai, and his daughter Libi, portrayed by Hadas Yaron.

The series ‘Shtisel’ focuses on the lives of a close-knit orthodox Jewish family residing in Jerusalem. Originally streamed in the U.S. on Netflix, seasons 1 to 3 of this show were purchased by Amazon Prime Video earlier this year.

The show ‘Kugel’ was created by Yehonatan Indursky, a co-creator of ‘Shtisel’. In Israel, Yes TV network holds the rights to it. For international distribution, Fremantle is responsible. The production is handled by Fremantle, along with Abot Hameiri from Fremantle and Menuetto Film.

The story unfolds during a time when Libi resided with Nuchem in the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Antwerp, Belgium, prior to her encounter with her later spouse, Akiva Shtisel.

Nuchem is a charming jewellery dealer, unafraid of bending the rules to make a sale. But when his wife Yides (Mili Avital) finally tires of his swindling and says she wants a divorce, their family life is thrown into disarray. Nuchem spends his days trying to save his marriage and achieve his dream of one day being a mogul, and his nights courting Pnina Baumbach, a recently widowed woman who inherited a restaurant that specializes in fine Jerusalem-style noodle kugels.

Over the course of the series, Nuchem finds himself grappling with the challenge of reconciling his professional aspirations with the requirements of the three important women in his personal life.

Due to the tumultuous state of her parents’ relationship, and although she is 22 years old, Libi has not found a compatible partner yet. Instead, she channels all her efforts and resources into achieving her goal as a successful writer. However, an unexpected encounter with an Orthodox man on a tram in Antwerp complicates matters. Now, Libi must ponder whether her route to success is through marriage, love, or continuing her journey towards becoming an accomplished author.

Jens Richter, CEO of Fremantle’s commercial and international sectors, stated: “The public reaction to ‘Shtisel’ has been incredible, sparking the interest of countless dedicated viewers. The upcoming series, ‘Kugel’, delves into a heartwarming set of love entanglements, unfulfilled vows, and miscommunications, all presented with wit, empathy, and striking human authenticity.

Nati Dinnar, the co-founder and CEO of Izzy, shared: “As a streaming service, we’ve long recognized the transformative impact of unique, exclusive dramas. I never thought my dreams could become reality by teaming up with such an exceptional crew on the highly acclaimed Israeli TV series, ‘Shtisel,’ which is adored by many.

We’ve been looking forward to this day ever since we obtained all three seasons of ‘Shtisel’ on Izzy. With a huge fan base for the series, we believe they will flock to Izzy to savor ‘Kugel,’ revisit ‘Shtisel,’ and delve into additional captivating narratives from Israel’s storytellers. In doing so, not only will they be treated to top-notch content, but they’ll also be helping Israel bring its rich storytelling to a global audience.

Dikla Barkai, head of drama at Abot Hameiri and executive producer of “Kugel,” expressed: ” ‘Kugel’ is a prequel to ‘Shtisel,’ brought into existence due to the immense affection viewers have for the initial series. With Izzy’s partnership, we can now bring the show back to its dedicated fanbase – there’s nothing more thrilling for us.

Kugel,” a series consisting of eight parts, is penned by Indursky and helmed by Erez Kavel in the director’s chair.
