Popular streamer Mike ‘shroud’ Grzesiek thinks Mixer launched at the wrong time. He believes the platform could have been a major player in the streaming industry if it had launched today.
As a longtime fan of streaming, I’ve seen a lot of platforms try to take on Twitch, but honestly, most haven’t lasted. I remember Mixer, which Microsoft used to own, being one of those – it just couldn’t compete in the end.
The platform initially gained a lot of attention in 2019 by signing popular streamers Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins and Shroud to exclusive, high-value contracts, luring them away from Twitch. However, both streamers eventually returned to Twitch in 2021 after the platform closed down.
Both streamers have looked back on their experiences with Mixer, noting areas where things could have been improved. Now that platforms like Kick are following a similar path to Mixer – offering large financial incentives – shroud has revisited the topic.
Shroud says Mixer came “too early” in streaming game
The ex-professional Counter-Strike player thinks the platform was innovative for its time, and would likely have thrived if it had been released today with a few minor adjustments.
He believes Mixer launched at the wrong time. According to him, if Microsoft released Mixer today, it would be incredibly successful, and wouldn’t need to offer the large financial incentives that platforms like Kick have used to attract streamers.
For a streaming platform to succeed, it needs to either heavily invest in its creators – like Kick does by offering significant payments – or offer really compelling reasons for them to join. Mixer had the potential to do this by partnering with game studios and leveraging their resources to create exciting content, but it launched before the market was ready.

The streamer said he wasn’t upset about still getting paid even though the platform was shutting down, but he thought it was launched too soon.
Twitch is now facing more competition, especially from platforms like Kick and YouTube, which are gaining popularity and attracting viewers.
