Shroud says Bungie won’t shut down Marathon even if it struggles

Popular Twitch streamer Shroud thinks Bungie won’t cancel their game Marathon, even if it doesn’t become very popular, because they’ve put so much effort and money into it.

During a recent livestream, the content creator – known for sharing his opinions on games like Arc Raiders – disagreed with the suggestion that Bungie might abandon or shut down Marathon if it doesn’t succeed after release.

Shroud says Bungie is too invested to abandon Marathon

While playing the game, Shroud explained that he thinks Marathon has a much better chance of success than other recently failed multiplayer games like Concord and Highguard. He believes this is because Marathon is backed by the large company Bungie and its parent company, Sony.

He firmly stated that the game would not be removed, saying, “Absolutely not, it’s not going to happen.”

They’ve put a lot of money into this, haven’t they? It’s different from what happened with Highguard. Highguard and Concord stand out because they were recently created using investor funding.

People are wondering if the game will quickly lose popularity, but Shroud doesn’t believe that’s going to happen. He points out that the developers, Bungie, have made a significant financial investment and are supported by Sony, giving them plenty of resources to keep the game going. He specifically mentions it’s different from the situation with Highguard, suggesting this game has much stronger backing.

Shroud believes Bungie is unlikely to cancel a project, especially one backed by a large publisher, because they’re a well-known and stable game studio.

He explained that with a company like Bungie, which has significant financial backing from Sony, it’s unlikely they’d give up, even with a small team. He believes it’s a classic case of the sunk cost fallacy – they’ve invested so much already that they feel compelled to continue, regardless of the odds.

Marathon marks Bungie’s first new game in seven years, following the release of Destiny 2 in 2017. While Destiny 2, a game constantly updated with new content, has been popular for years, player numbers have been declining since the release of its latest major expansion, The Final Shape, in 2024.

The numbers

Marathon was released on March 5th for consoles and PC. Although the number of players on Steam isn’t always a good indicator of how well a game is doing, comparing Marathon’s player numbers to those of a similar game, Arc Raiders, suggests it might not be attracting enough players to keep it going long-term.

Marathon’s current all-time concurrent player record has so far reached just over 88,000.

Currently, the highest number of players Marathon has seen at one time is 88,000. Arc Raiders, on the other hand, reached 465,000 concurrent players. These numbers only reflect PC players and don’t include sales figures or the number of people playing on consoles, as that information isn’t easily accessible.
