Shrinking Star Harrison Ford Was “Protective” Of Michael J. Fox While Filming Season 3

Michael J. Fox recently discussed his wonderful time filming season 3 of Shrinking, highlighting how supportive his co-star, Harrison Ford, was. The Apple TV+ show, created by Bill Lawrence and stars Jason Segel and Brett Goldstein, is coming back in the new year and has already earned seven Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Similar to Apple TV+’s popular show Ted Lasso, Shrinking isn’t a typical comedy. A key storyline that continues into season 3 focuses on therapist Paul Rhodes (played by Ford) and his struggle with Parkinson’s disease, a condition that affects the brain and causes movement problems.

At the A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s Gala, hosted by the Michael J. Fox Foundation, actor Michael J. Fox told PEOPLE how much he enjoyed working with Harrison Ford on Shrinking. He described Ford as “brilliant and fun,” and shared that Ford was very supportive and wanted him to have a positive experience.

Michael J. Fox praised Harrison Ford, calling him a remarkably subtle and underrated actor. Fox recently shared with PEOPLE that he’ll be appearing in three episodes of Shrinking season 3, playing a character living with Parkinson’s disease. Details about his role are still being kept under wraps.

Michael J. Fox, known for his role in Back to the Future, will appear as a guest star in season 3 of Shrinking, which was announced in May. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991. He and Jason Segel, who created Shrinking, have worked together before, having co-starred on the 1990s sitcom Spin City. Although Fox had stopped acting in 2020, he was moved by the story in Shrinking and decided to return.

Fox shared with PEOPLE that being on the set of ‘Shrinking’ was a new experience where he didn’t have to worry about feeling unwell or being too tired. He was simply able to focus on acting. He explained that if he felt unable to perform a scene, he’d just work through it and incorporate his limitations into his performance, allowing him to get through it.

In the season finale of Shrinking, Paul reveals he’s stopping his Parkinson’s medication because it’s no longer helping. It’s unclear how this will impact his story in season three, but Paul’s experience resonates deeply with the show’s creators, Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence, both of whom have family members who have lived with Parkinson’s.

Lawrence explained to Deadline that, personally and with his family’s history of Parkinson’s, he and Brett were most focused on portraying the realities of living with the disease in an honest and hopeful way, and what the future holds for those affected.

Season 3 of Shrinking is adding some big names to its cast! Joining Michael J. Fox and Harrison Ford is Candice Bergen, the Emmy-winning star of Murphy Brown, though her role is currently under wraps. Jeff Daniels, also an Emmy winner, will play Jimmy’s (Jason Segel) father. The new season will have 11 episodes.

The third season of Shrinking starts January 28, 2026, on Apple TV+. New episodes will be released every Wednesday until April 8.
