Shrinking Season 3, Episode 10 Recap: Jimmy Finally Hits His Breaking Point

Warning! Spoilers for Shrinking season 3, episode 10 ahead!

In the season 3 finale of Shrinking, Jimmy (Jason Segel) finally unravels. Throughout the season, he’s been dealing with a lot – Alice (Lukita Maxwell) getting ready for college, difficult interactions with his father, Paul’s (Harrison Ford) retirement, and the challenges of finding love. He’d been holding it together, but in episode 10, everything comes crashing down at once. Because he hasn’t addressed his underlying issues, his response is far from what he intended.

Okay, so last time on Shrinking, I found out my dad, Randy, was planning to ditch my daughter Alice’s graduation for a fishing trip – and was just going to tell her as he was leaving! That was bad enough, but then he dropped a bomb: he actually preferred Sofi to Tia. It totally threw me. I couldn’t handle it, and I ended up messing things up with Sofi, basically breaking us up.

In the final episodes of Shrinking season 3, Paul completed his last week at work and officially retired. He chose to pass his practice on to Gaby (Jessica Williams), hoping she would transform it into a center for trauma care. Their journey to this point was especially meaningful considering Gaby’s past experience with a patient loss earlier in the season. With that resolved, Paul is now ready to move to Connecticut. However, before he does, the season concludes with Alice’s graduation, which takes place in episode 10.

Alice Has Officially Graduated From High School

In the tenth episode of Shrinking‘s third season, Alice’s graduation day is finally here. True to his word, Randy leaves town before the celebrations begin, which deeply hurts Jimmy. However, Jimmy sets his feelings aside to support Alice on her special day. The event is tinged with sadness, as both Jimmy and Alice are keenly aware of Tia’s absence. They acknowledge how much they miss her, but try to enjoy the day as much as possible.

Jimmy is facing a double blow: Alice is graduating high school and then leaving for college soon after. As seen in Shrinking, she’s going to Wesleyan University in Connecticut, which means her summer with Jimmy won’t be what they’d hoped for, as soccer training starts in June. And it’s not just Alice who’s moving east – Jimmy has another change to deal with as well.

Paul Finally Makes His Big Move To Connecticut

In the third season of Shrinking, Meg shared with Jimmy that Paul was planning to relocate to Connecticut to be near her and her family. The tenth episode shows Paul actually making that move. He’s wrapped things up at work, packed his belongings, and even arranged a quirky rental agreement with Gaby – she’ll pay him just $1 a month, as long as he sets up a Venmo account. Alice’s graduation serves as both a celebration and a farewell, and the episode ends with Paul on his way to the airport.

The main issue is Paul didn’t keep Jimmy informed. He didn’t tell him about giving the building to Gaby, or even that he was moving. Jimmy had to learn about everything from other people. While Paul often acts this way, Jimmy is already stressed dealing with problems involving his father, so he doesn’t have much tolerance for Paul’s behavior right now.

Jimmy’s Dad Refuses To Make Any Changes To His Behavior

A major theme in season 3 of Shrinking is Jimmy’s complicated relationship with his father, Randy. Randy was often absent and struggles to express his emotions, creating tension with the more open Jimmy. What frustrates Jimmy most is that others – especially his sister, Alice – seem to have a much more positive view of their father than he does, failing to recognize what he sees as Randy’s flaws, like his unwillingness to attend Jimmy’s graduation or be truthful about his plans.

Paul advises Jimmy to be honest with his dad, Randy, about how he’s feeling. He explains that the point isn’t to get Randy to change his mind, but to help Jimmy feel better by sharing his experiences. Jimmy tries his best to talk to Randy, but it doesn’t go well. Randy firmly refuses to attend Alice’s graduation and dismisses Jimmy’s feelings as being too sensitive. This causes Jimmy to stop talking and keep things bottled up. It’s even more upsetting when Alice seems unfazed by her grandfather’s absence, making Jimmy feel worse.

Why Jimmy Is So Angry At Paul In Shrinking Season 3, Episode 10 Explained

Throughout the tenth episode of Shrinking‘s third season, Jimmy doesn’t express his anger towards his father. Instead, he directs it all at Paul. He’s upset that Paul hasn’t shown enough gratitude for everything Jimmy has done for him, and that Paul decided the future of the practice—giving it to Gaby—without including him in the conversation. Jimmy is also hurt that he learned about the move to Connecticut from Meg, not directly from Paul. Ultimately, he realizes that he cares about Paul more than Paul cares about him.

Jimmy feels the same way about his dad as he does about Paul. He didn’t directly say it to Randy, but he made his feelings very clear to Paul. It’s clear from their conversation that Jimmy is unfairly taking his frustrations with his father out on his mentor, though he does have valid reasons to be upset. While Paul has been a better support system than Randy, he still shares some of the same flaws. Jimmy’s complaints apply to both men who have acted as father figures in his life.

How Episode 10 Sets Up The Shrinking Season 3 Finale

The season 3 finale of Shrinking leaves Jimmy and Paul’s conflict unresolved. After arguing, Paul suggests they talk things through the next day when they’ve both calmed down. But Jimmy doesn’t contact him, and Paul doesn’t push for a reconciliation. He simply lets Jimmy know his car is here and then moves across the country, leaving a significant strain on their relationship.

To add to Jimmy’s troubles, the season 3 finale of Shrinking shows almost everyone he’s close to leaving. Alice is going off to college, and Paul is moving to Connecticut. Sean is moving out and in with Derek, while Brian and Charlie are heading to Tennessee for work for three months. Derek and Liz are planning a major trip before becoming grandparents. Gaby will still be nearby, but she’ll be busy transforming Paul’s practice and won’t be working with Jimmy anymore.

Jimmy’s facing a difficult situation as Shrinking heads into its season 3 finale and anticipates season 4. While he’s made significant progress since the beginning of the series, strained relationships with his father and Paul, combined with the loss of support from those he cares about, suggest he might relapse into old patterns. Hopefully, the show’s focus on progress will allow Jimmy to continue healing and move forward.
