DreamWorks is bringing back one of its classic animated series in 2027, but it’s possible they’ve chosen the wrong one. While DreamWorks has created amazing animated films like the epic How to Train Your Dragon and the action-packed Kung Fu Panda, there’s another franchise that deserves a reboot even more.
The Madagascar franchise hasn’t had a new installment in a long time, and it’s time for a comeback. The original film was successful in 2005, leading to sequels, a spin-off movie, and several TV shows. DreamWorks should consider bringing this often-overlooked series back to the big screen, especially since it’s been over a decade since the last theatrical release.
Madagascar Is DreamWorks’ Most Underrated Franchise
While DreamWorks is known for franchises like Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon, other great series often get overlooked. Madagascar is a prime example, and it’s faded from public memory over time. After 21 years since the first film, it’s time for Madagascar to get the recognition it deserves from both fans and DreamWorks.
Though perhaps not as famous as movies like Shrek, the Madagascar series is a genuinely enjoyable and touching franchise with characters that viewers easily connect with. The animated trilogy follows Alex the Lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett-Smith), and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer)—all incredibly likeable characters who grow and change throughout the films. As these four animals journey around the world, they form a sweet and relatable family bond that makes the series so heartwarming.
Beyond its charming main characters, Madagascar features a truly memorable group of supporting characters. From the highly skilled Penguins to the fun-loving King Julian and his followers, these characters are so popular they’ve even starred in their own TV shows.
DreamWorks has created many beloved franchises, like How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda, but Madagascar is the one most deserving of a new installment. It’s been too long since fans have seen Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria – the last movie, Madagascar 3: Europe‘s Most Wanted, came out in 2012. Even after ten years, there’s still a strong audience for more Madagascar adventures, though figuring out what those stories would be is another matter.
Are There More Stories to Tell in the Madagascar Franchise?
DreamWorks has a lot of potential to bring the Madagascar films back, and many ways they could go about it. The most straightforward option would be to make Madagascar 4. The third movie concluded with Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman joining a traveling circus and continuing their global adventures with a new group of friends. This sets the stage for another sequel filled with exciting possibilities, possibly taking them to a brand new continent – just like the previous three films did.
DreamWorks could also continue the Madagascar series by creating a new spin-off focused on its popular supporting characters. The 2014 film, Penguins of Madagascar, which featured Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private in a spy-adventure, was successful and deserves a sequel.
The story could also focus on the lemurs, especially the hilarious King Julien. The TV series All Hail King Julien already gave us a lot more about their history, including Julien’s struggles to become king and his complicated past with many former wives. A new movie could embrace the silly, over-the-top humor of that show, bringing back a beloved part of the Madagascar universe.
After a long break, it’s time to revisit the world of Madagascar. It’s been over ten years since the last movie, and fans are eager for a new installment – whether that’s a direct sequel or a spin-off. People just want to return to this fun universe with its beloved characters and stories.
Is Madagascar 4 Coming?
Fans of the Madagascar movies might be worried about the long wait for a new installment, but there’s still a possibility of a fourth film. A sequel has been planned for a while, though its release date is uncertain. Originally, it was expected in 2018, just two years after the third movie, but DreamWorks later removed it from their schedule.
Ever since Madagascar 3 came out, people involved with the movies have occasionally mentioned the idea of making another one. Despite their enthusiasm, a sequel never really became a priority and was often put aside to focus on different projects.
Despite long odds, a fourth Madagascar movie hasn’t been ruled out. Director Tom McGrath revealed to The Animation Scoop in January 2026 that DreamWorks is still considering Madagascar 4, but only if they can develop a compelling story that feels like a natural continuation of the series. Because Madagascar 3 provided a satisfying conclusion, the team wants to ensure any sequel genuinely adds to the story.
Although it’s been a while since a new Madagascar movie, DreamWorks should definitely make another one. The series is too popular and well-known to end after just a few films. With DreamWorks bringing back other classic franchises, a fourth Madagascar movie seems quite possible.
Madagascar is available to stream on Peacock.
