The show Shifting Gears is taking a break and will return in January 2026 with plenty of exciting things planned. After a special reunion with the cast of Home Improvement in the premiere, another big guest star will be joining the show later this season. I’m starting to wonder how all this will affect Matt’s romantic life, though!
I just read that Angela Kinsey, who I loved as Angela on The Office, is going to be on Season 2 of Shifting Gears! She’s playing a character named Lynn, and apparently, Tim Allen’s character, Matt, meets her on this dating app called TradSwipe – it’s for people who want traditional values. From what I hear, they really connect at first, but there’s something a little off about the whole thing, which makes me super curious to see how it plays out!
It’s unclear what’s bothering Lynn, but it seems Matt might just be ready to date again after his relationship with Eve. The fall finale of Shifting Gears featured Matt declaring his feelings for Eve, played by Jenna Elfman. However, Eve announced she’s taking a job overseas to choreograph a K-pop group’s tour. This exciting opportunity will keep her in South Korea and Europe for at least five months. Realizing how difficult a long-distance relationship would be for an unknown period, Matt ended things with Eve, even though they were in love.

When the show comes back, Matt is probably going to be really hurt, even though he might appear to be trying to get over things. He could be so focused on moving forward that he misses red flags with the person he’s dating. There’s a chance this new date, Lynn, is hiding something – maybe a surprising past, or a secret reason for being on the dating app that she’s not ready to share until she’s certain about Matt. Really, anything could happen.
Angela Kinsey is sure to do a fantastic job with her new role as Lynn. Most people know her as Angela Martin from all nine seasons of The Office, where she had amazing chemistry with Rainn Wilson’s Dwight. I expect she’ll bring a lot of humor – and maybe a little bit of unpredictability – to the part, and I’m excited to see what she does, even though I’m a bit skeptical.
Season 2 is almost over, with only five episodes remaining. It returns to ABC on Wednesday, January 7th, so the show has a lot of plot to cover in a short amount of time. We don’t yet know when the character Lynn will be introduced, but there’s plenty to anticipate when Shifting Gears comes back. You can watch all previous episodes now with a Hulu subscription.
