Be warned! This article contains spoilers for the *Shifting Gears* Season 2 episode “Passion.” Watch the episode on Hulu if you don’t want to have it ruined!
As a big fan of ‘Shifting Gears,’ I was excited for this week’s episode, and it definitely delivered… eventually. They kept the celebrity cameos coming – this time with Gabriel Iglesias dropping by Matt’s garage – but after the first two episodes focused so much on recognizable faces like stars from ‘Home Improvement’ and Lilly Singh, I was hoping for more substance. Thankfully, they gave us a significant development for Kat Dennings’ character, Riley, which actually addressed a concern I had with the new season and made things feel much more grounded.
I was honestly a little worried about Riley at the start of the season – I’d really been hoping she’d finally catch a break after last year. But I’m so relieved the latest episode delivered! It was fantastic to see things turn around for her and make her work life so much easier before the year was out. I’m genuinely thrilled it happened.
Riley Finally Quit Working For Eve, And Started Her Own Business
I initially thought it was great that Riley took a job working for Eve, Matt’s biggest rival. But then Eve started dating Riley’s dad, and it became awkward. It’s just… what if they break up? Things could get really messy at work. Plus, did anyone else find it strange how much Eve talked to Riley about her relationship with Matt? I wouldn’t want to hear about that if I were Riley.
Luckily, Eve let Riley go when Riley gave up after her father rejected her request for funding for a coffee shop. Eve explained to her former employee that she was taking away her support system, which meant Riley had to pursue her dream on her own, even without her father’s approval. This actually turned out to be exactly what Riley needed, and she successfully launched her business, quickly gaining some positive attention.
Riley Running A Coffee Shop Stand In The Alley Is The Perfect Solution For Shifting Gears
The coffee stand was built surprisingly fast, but the best part of *Shifting Gears* was finding a great location for Riley’s new business – the alley between the shops. This way, she can still work at the auto garage, something she would have missed if she’d chosen a different path like law school or another job.
More On Shifting Gears
I really enjoyed the first season of Shifting Gears, and Kat Dennings’ story about meeting Tim Allen perfectly illustrates why they have such great chemistry together.
I definitely love this show because of the great connection between Kat Dennings and Tim Allen as father and daughter. However, Kat Dennings is a fantastic actress who works well with everyone, so it would be a shame to not let her share scenes with Jenna Elfman, Seann William Scott, or Daryl Mitchell.
I’m relieved Riley’s job is now secure, regardless of any issues between Eve and Matt. The show’s writers could have easily created drama by involving their conflict with Riley’s career, but now that she’s self-employed, that’s no longer a concern. I’m really happy about this new path for her, and I hope Matt’s worries about her success don’t come true.
