began its second season last night with an episode featuring Tim Allen and his previous co-stars Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning. This is one of two reunion episodes that the show’s creator, Michelle Nader, is planning for this season. She also hopes to reunite Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, who haven’t worked together since their popular CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls ended.
In a recent interview with TVLine, Nader – who also ran 2 Broke Girls – shared their hope to bring Dennings and Behrs back together on a future episode of Shifting Gears. “We’d love to have Beth appear on our show. It just so happens they film [The Neighborhood] on Tuesdays too,” the showrunner said. Behrs is currently starring in The Neighborhood, which is filming its eighth and final season at Radford Studio Center in Studio City – about five miles away from where Shifting Gears films at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank.
For Shifting Gears on ABC to happen, the show’s producers would need permission from the network to feature Behrs, and they’d also have to work around her filming schedule for The Neighborhood, finding a time when it’s on hiatus and Shifting Gears is actively filming. Even with these challenges, Nader is determined to bring the original 2 Broke Girls duo back together. “We really want Beth to be part of this. She’s a top priority for us,” she explained.
2 Broke Girls Was Canceled After Six Seasons
Created by Michael Patrick King and Whitney Cummings, 2 Broke Girls featured Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs as best friends Max Black and Caroline Channing. They worked at a diner and tried to save money to open their own cupcake shop. While critics had varying opinions, the chemistry between Dennings and Behrs was widely appreciated, and the show performed well in ratings for several seasons.
Sadly, the sitcom’s viewership decreased in its final seasons, leading CBS to cancel it. Following 2 Broke Girls‘ end, Behrs took on a leading role in The Neighborhood, and Dennings starred in the Hulu original Dollface, which concluded after four seasons in 2022, before she returned to traditional television with Shifting Gears.
Shifting Gears isn’t the first show to try and bring the stars of 2 Broke Girls back together for an episode. Mike Schiff, a co-showrunner on The Neighborhood, told TVLine they considered featuring Kat Dennings a few seasons ago. They even had a potential part for her, but she wasn’t free. They investigated the possibility, but it seems she wasn’t even in the area at the time.
The episode Season 5’s “Welcome to the Hot Prospect” featured Gemma, played by Behrs, dealing with a secret from her time in beauty pageants when an old friend, Linzie, visited. Dennings was originally slated to play Linzie, a role Schiff thought would be ideal for her. However, the part eventually went to Katlyn Carlson.
Shifting Gears airs a new episode every Wednesday on ABC.
