The new ABC sitcom, Shifting Gears, is already attracting well-known actors, having started with several Home Improvement cast members reuniting with Tim Allen. Now, Luke Macfarlane – a familiar face from Hallmark’s popular Christmas movies – is joining the show for the 2026 season. The only downside for fans is that he’ll be filming Shifting Gears and won’t be able to appear in Hallmark’s upcoming Christmas movies this year!
Luke Macfarlane, known for his many Hallmark movies, is joining the cast of the ABC sitcom Shifting Gears as Sam Parker, as reported by Deadline. Although this is Macfarlane’s first appearance on the show, Sam has been established as the son of Tim Allen’s character, Matt, and the brother of Kat Dennings’ Riley. Sam is a Navy veteran and will appear as a guest star later this season. While there’s no specific date yet, it’s likely he won’t arrive until after the Christmas episode, following the show’s winter break.

The fall finale of Shifting Gears, a special Christmas episode, will air on ABC on Wednesday, December 10th at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
