Shhhh! The Drama Has a Secret

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson recently starred in intense romantic films, and their next project, The Drama, looks to continue that trend. The trailer for the A24 film dropped before Valentine’s Day, hinting at a far-from-typical love story. The film introduces Zendaya and Pattinson as Emma and Charlie, a seemingly perfect couple enjoying a picturesque life. The story shifts when they have dinner with their married friends (Alana Haim and Mamoudou Athie), who propose a game: everyone shares their worst deed. The confessions start lighthearted, but take a dark turn when Emma begins to speak. The trailer cuts off before we hear what she did, but Haim’s shocked reaction suggests it’s something shocking.

The atmosphere shifts dramatically. During sex, Emma hits Charlie with excessive force, then angrily accuses him of being preoccupied with a secret she’s hiding. She even threatens him with a kitchen knife. Charlie is left completely shaken and distraught. A wedding photographer, played by Zoë Winters from Materialists, observes their unraveling, noting they don’t seem to know each other anymore. The couple’s problems stem from a terrible thing Emma has done – something truly awful.

Kristoffer Borgli, the director of the Nicolas Cage thriller Dream Scenario, wrote and directed The Drama. The film’s darkly comedic tone is similar to his earlier hit, Sick of Myself, which followed a self-absorbed woman and her equally problematic partner. Ari Aster, known for films like Hereditary and Eddington, also produced, suggesting a decidedly unsettling experience. The Drama arrives in theaters on April 3rd.
