Shay Mitchell Joins Stephen Amell in Fox’s Baywatch Reboot

Fox is adding to the cast of its new version of the popular 1990s show. Actress Shay Mitchell, who you may know from Pretty Little Liars, YOU, and Dollface, will be a main character in the series.

According to TVLine, Mitchell will play Trina, a former lawyer who leaves her successful career to become a full-time lifeguard. She’s known as the smartest person on Baywatch. The character is described as passionate and dedicated, often following her instincts, though she also has a habit of overthinking things with her intelligence.

The New Baywatch Is Set in the Same Universe

The upcoming Baywatch series will continue the story of the original show, which was a huge hit throughout the 1990s and ran for 11 seasons from 1989 to 2001. Directed by McG for its first episode, the new series is expected to premiere later this year as part of the 2026-27 TV season. This will be the third television show for the Baywatch franchise, following the brief Baywatch Nights spin-off, and building on the 2017 movie starring Dwayne Johnson which also took place in the same world.

Stephen Amell, known for his roles in Arrow and Heels, joins the new Baywatch series as Hobie Buchannon, the son of Mitch Buchannon (played by David Hasselhoff in the original show). Hobie was previously portrayed by Brandon Call and Jeremy Jackson in the original Baywatch. While it’s currently unknown if David Hasselhoff will appear in the new series, there’s speculation he might return as Cody Madison in a recurring role.

The new Baywatch series will also star Brooks Nader (Love Thy Nader) as Selene, a witty captain; Noah Beck (Sidelined) as Luke, a new lifeguard; Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone) as Nat, an Olympic athlete who’s joining the lifeguard team; and Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad, a Marine returning to Venice Beach to look after his father.

Baywatch Returns for a New Era

Created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Greg Bonann, the show centered around a group of lifeguards and their lives. It depicted both the personal connections between the lifeguards and the hazards they faced working on the California beaches – from rescues after drownings to dealing with natural disasters like earthquakes and even shark attacks. The series featured a talented cast including David Hasselhoff, Alexandra Paul, Gregory Alan Williams, Parker Stevenson, Billy Warlock, Erika Eleniak, and Yasmine Bleeth.

When announcing the show’s revival, Fox Television Network President Michael Thorn explained that the original Baywatch made lifeguards famous. Now, Fox is teaming up with Fremantle to bring the popular series back for a new generation. They plan to deliver fresh stories, introduce new actors, and maintain the exciting, large-scale feel that made Baywatch a worldwide hit. Matt Nix and original co-creator Greg Bonann are also involved in the reboot.

Baywatch will debut on Fox this year with an exact premiere date yet to be announced.
