Shawn Levy had to rework the entire final act of Star Wars: Starfighter

Shawn Levy, who wrote and directed Star Wars: Starfighter, unexpectedly had to revise the movie’s ending, and he had an interesting take on the process.

It’s no surprise that another Star Wars movie is being rewritten in 2025. Like the upcoming season of Stranger Things relying on 80s music, this is just what you’d expect. The Star Wars franchise has had a rocky few years, with many films and projects being revised, scrapped, or stalled in development.

Unlike many proposed Star Wars projects, Starfighter is officially happening and is scheduled for release in May 2027. The movie will be set after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, though details about the story are currently being kept secret.

The movie will follow Ryan Gosling’s character – likely a Starfighter pilot – as he goes on an adventure with a young boy played by Flynn Gray. Director Shawn Levy recently shared that he wasn’t happy with the original ending and had to create a completely different one.

Shawn Levy is “grateful” that the original Star Wars: Starfighter ending didn’t work

Levy revealed on the podcast ‘On Film… With Kevin McCarthy’ that he changed the movie’s ending. He realized something in the initial script by Jonathan Tropper wasn’t quite right and needed to be fixed.

We originally planned something completely different for the third act, but it didn’t work out as expected. I had to create a new plan on the fly, and I’m actually filming that part of the movie right now.

I’m thankful every day that my initial plan didn’t succeed. Being forced to find a new approach led me to something far better than I originally imagined.

McCarthy didn’t say exactly what was wrong with the third act – whether it was the writing, the location, or a particular action scene. However, he did mention which movie in the series is most comparable to Starfighter.

To be honest, while many people would say The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope is the best, I think Return of the Jedi really hits all the right notes. It perfectly balances important themes with fun moments, exciting adventure, genuine emotion, and impressive visuals – it just feels complete to me.

Levy’s comparison to the last movie in the original Star Wars trilogy is ambitious and will definitely get fans excited. While we still have a wait for the new Starfighter film, Star Wars fans have something to look forward to with The Mandalorian & Grogu hitting theaters on May 22, 2026.
