Shannon Elizabeth on Missing Out on Scary Movie 6: ‘I Didn’t Get the Call’

The sixth installment of the Scary Movie franchise is set to release in theaters this June. While many of the original cast members will return, Shannon Elizabeth will not be appearing in the film.

I remember Shannon Elizabeth as Buffy in the first Scary Movie – she was Doofy’s sister! I was excited when I heard they were bringing back some of the original cast for the sixth film, and I know she was too, hoping to rejoin the fun. But she recently told Entertainment Tonight that she sadly wasn’t asked to be in it, which I’m sure felt pretty awful. Still, she’s a good sport and said she’ll be in the audience as a fan, cheering on her old co-stars. It’s great she’s staying positive!

Shannon Elizabeth Was Left Out of the Scary Movie Reunion

“I really wanted to be involved, but I wasn’t selected,” Elizabeth explained. “I’ll definitely be watching as a fan, though. I think it’ll be great to see everyone back together again.”

Elizabeth might not have been asked back because her character died in the first Scary Movie. However, that shouldn’t automatically rule out a return. Scream 7 announced it would bring back several characters who previously died, and Sarah Michelle Gellar recently reprised her deceased role in the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel. Either approach could work for a new Scary Movie.

The Scary Movie series is known for bringing characters back from the dead, even after they’ve been definitively killed off. For example, Shawn Wayans’ character, Ray Wilkins, dies at the end of the first movie but reappears alive in Scary Movie 2 without any explanation. Anna Faris’ Cindy and Regina Hall’s Brenda also experience similar resurrections throughout the series. Ultimately, these films don’t take plot consistency too seriously, so these unexpected returns are part of the fun.

Many Franchise Stars Return for Scary Movie

In addition to Marlon and Shawn Wayans, several other familiar faces are returning for the next installment, including Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Jon Abrahams, Cheri Oteri, Anthony Anderson, and Chris Elliott. Joining them will be Damon Wayans Jr., Kim Wayans, and Heidi Gardner.

Okay, so I’m SO excited! It’s been 26 years since Shorty, Ray, Cindy, and Brenda barely escaped that creepy masked killer, and now it looks like he’s after them again! Apparently, no horror movie idea is safe in this new Scary Movie. The synopsis says they’re all getting back together with some old and new faces to basically make fun of everything happening in horror right now – all the reboots, remakes, sequels, prequels, and anything trying to be a ‘legacy’ story. They’re promising they’re going to go after every horror trope and break all the rules. And get this – the Wayans family is back, and they’re taking on cancel culture itself! It sounds absolutely wild and I can’t wait.

Scary Movie debuts in theaters on Jun. 5, 2026.
