‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ Star Pauline Chalamet on That ‘Mortifying’ Sex Toy Scene: ‘I Was Red in the Face’

As a long-time fan of Pauline Chalamet’s work, I must say her portrayal of Kimberly in “The Sex Lives of College Girls” is nothing short of captivating. Her character’s naive and well-intentioned nature resonates with me on a deep level, reminding me of my own college days – albeit without the vibrating dildo incidents!

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers from Season 3, Episode 3 of “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” now streaming on Max.

As a movie critic, I found myself deeply captivated by Pauline Chalamet’s portrayal of Kimberly in “The Sex Lives of College Girls.” Her character is no stranger to experiences that leave one feeling humbled, yet she carries an endearing innocence and good intentions. However, her eagerness to do good often leads to scenes that are both laugh-out-loud hilarious and painfully cringe-worthy.

In the third episode of Season 3 titled “Four to a Suite,” there’s an uncomfortable scene involving a vibrating sex toy hidden in a bag that might lead many viewers to consider switching off their TVs due to the cringe factor. It seems even Chalamet found herself feeling similarly during filming.

During this current season, Kimberly finds herself attracted to an appealing bisexual student at Essex. She worries she might not be bold enough to satisfy him, so she visits a sex store. This results in an extremely uncomfortable situation that escalates significantly when Kimberly accidentally knocks her backpack onto the floor, causing a vibrator inside to vigorously shake.

When the team demonstrated how vigorously the bag would move, Chalamet turned bright red, feeling embarrassed. It was mortifying, she exclaimed, asking them gently if they could tone down the shaking effect. However, her suggestion fell on deaf ears in favor of maintaining a comedic touch. Amidst laughter, she joked, ‘Oh my goodness! I was desperately trying to hush that thing up. I even considered breaking it and finding an alternative.’

Despite finding it embarrassing, Chalamet acknowledges that she can relate to her character’s perspective. She explains that part of portraying a 20-year-old college student involves exploring these formative experiences. For this particular scene, she comments, “It’s immature thinking. It’s very naive. It’s similar to wanting to be an ally, and more about not understanding exactly how to be an ally.

Timothee Chalamet expresses enthusiasm about portraying a college student, stating that this stage of life has long intrigued her. “It’s a time when one holds strong beliefs, thinking they are absolute truths, and any deviation from these views is seen as incorrect. As life experiences introduce different perspectives, these beliefs evolve, adding complexity to one’s opinions.
