Recently released data shows that The Green Hornet became available on the streaming service on April 1st, alongside several comedies including Coming to America, Legally Blonde, and Pineapple Express, which also stars Seth Rogen. The 2011 superhero movie was directed by Michel Gondry, known for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Rogen plays the lead role in the film – a rich newspaper publisher who secretly fights crime.

The Green Hornet Divided Critics & Audiences Alike

Seth Rogen plays a wealthy and carefree man whose life is turned upside down when his father dies. He teams up with Kato (Jay Chou), a clever worker from his father’s company, and together they discover a knack for fighting crime. They decide to become masked heroes and target the city’s most dangerous criminals, including the formidable Chudnofsky.

Alongside Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, and Christoph Waltz, Cameron Diaz played Lenore Case in The Green Hornet. Lenore was the lead secretary at The Daily Sentinel and eventually became The Green Hornet’s romantic partner. The film also featured Tom Wilkinson, known from Shakespeare in Love, and Edward James Olmos, famous for his role in Blade Runner, as well as other talented actors.

Even with a cast of famous actors, The Green Hornet didn’t impress either critics or moviegoers. It received a ‘rotten’ score of 45% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 235 reviews, and audiences were even less enthusiastic, giving it only a 43% approval rating from over 100,000 reviews.

The film’s mixed reception was reflected in its box office performance. It earned $227.8 million, but with a production cost of $120 million, the profit wasn’t as high as expected.

The Future of The Green Hornet Remains Uncertain (For Now)

Before The Green Hornet was released, the filmmakers were optimistic and had already started planning a sequel. However, the movie’s high production costs were a major factor in its failure, and the studio eventually decided not to pursue any further Green Hornet films.

Back in 2016, Paramount and Chernin Entertainment obtained the rights to make a new Green Hornet movie, and there was talk of a reboot. Director Gavin O’Connor, known for The Way Back, was initially attached to the project, but it never came to fruition and the movie rights eventually expired.

Despite past challenges, there’s still potential for The Green Hornet to return to the big screen. In 2020, Universal and Amasia Entertainment reportedly began working on a new film based on the classic characters. Later, in 2022, Leigh Whannell, known for his work on the Saw movies, signed on to the project, but there haven’t been any new developments since then.

Seth Rogen’s The Green Hornet is now streaming for free on Pluto TV.
