Serious issues killed this game. After many months, gameplay from the adaptation of Escape from New York has leaked

Footage from a video game adaptation of John Carpenter’s Escape from New York that was never released has recently appeared online. This includes gameplay videos offering a glimpse of how the game could have played.

Gameplay from the canceled Escape from New York game

Slipgate Ironworks, the team behind Tempest Rising, was developing the game. However, 80 Level reported that it was canceled in March 2023 because of problems with how the game was being made, alongside widespread layoffs at Embracer Group as part of a company restructuring.

We initially only saw a few concept images online. But now, there are seventeen videos on YouTube – totaling over an hour – showing very early gameplay. These videos offer a first look at the game’s maps, items, character and weapon movements, abilities, and how the game works.

One of the longer videos, which is over 15 minutes long, shows actual gameplay footage. This gives us a glimpse of what the game would have been like if it hadn’t been cancelled. The game was being built with Unreal Engine 5 and was designed for cooperative play.

The game lets you play as at least three unique characters, each with their own abilities, as you progress through various levels. Battles involve a mix of close-combat weapons and firearms. You can see the game in action in the gameplay video below.

Slipgate Ironworks and Embracer Group have never officially said the game Escape from New York was cancelled, or even that it was in development.
