Notable real estate agent and “Selling Sunset” personality, Jason Oppenheim, is voicing concerns over unlawful tactics used by some landlords, specifically price-hiking.

Amidst the destructive wildfires ravaging areas like Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Eaton Canyon, and surrounding regions – causing thousands to flee their homes in panic and seek shelter – there’s been an increase in online discussions about LA landlords exploiting this emergency.

During an interview with BBC, Oppenheim shared an instance involving one of his clients who was subjected to price gouging. This unethical practice is forbidden in California if rental prices surge more than 10% during a state-declared emergency. To put it into perspective, he rented a house for $13,000 per month but offered an increased amount of $20,000 and even agreed to pay six months in advance. However, the landlord refused this offer and instead demanded $23,000 a month. Despite California having laws against price gouging, they seem to be disregarded currently, and it’s not the right moment to exploit such situations.

California authorities, including Governor Gavin Newsom, have spoken up on this matter as well. In response to a state of emergency, Governor Newsom has taken action by issuing an executive order intended to ban deceitful practices and excessive pricing.

On Instagram, Oppenheim and his real estate firm announced their willingness to assist individuals affected by the fires. They pledged that all representatives from The Oppenheim Group would work on their behalf without charge, or refund any commissions earned during the transaction.
