Selena Gomez Says ‘Some of the Magic Has Disappeared’ Amid ‘Emilia Pérez’ Controversy, but She Has ‘No Regrets’: ‘I Would Do This Movie Over and Over Again’

As a devoted cinephile, I found myself drawn to the Santa Barbara Film Festival this past weekend, where Selena Gomez opened up about the latest fuss surrounding her Academy Award-nominated film, “Emilia Pérez.

This year’s film with the highest number of Oscar nominations has faced a decline in public favor since tweets posted by its lead actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, in late January emerged, containing views considered controversial about Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars. In response to this, Netflix has chosen to disassociate from Gascón and is no longer providing her with financial backing for award campaigning.

Gomez remarked about the controversy at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, where she was honored with the Virtuosos Award, by saying that some of the luster has faded. However, she remains proud of her accomplishments and grateful for the experience. She lives without regrets and would gladly reprise the role in the movie if given the chance.

Initially, there was a tweet attributed to Gascón, suggesting that Gomez was referred to as a “wealthy rodent.” However, in an interview with CNN en Español last week, Gascón clarified that the post wasn’t hers. She stated emphatically, “That’s definitely not mine. I have never spoken about my partner. I would never use such language towards her.

Reflecting on the film’s production, I can’t help but cherish those memories. It was truly remarkable when someone recognized something deeper within me beyond my apparent abilities. Director Jacques Audiard placed his trust in me, a confidence that I deeply appreciated. This opportunity allowed me to prove my versatility to others, and I hope this is just the start of many more opportunities to showcase my potential in this industry.

Gomez, who earned recognition with BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations but missed out on an Oscar nod for her performance, expressed that she’s eager to concentrate solely on acting for a while. She admitted, causing gasps from the audience, that it might be tough for her to return to music following this experience.
