As a lifelong fan of Selena Gomez, I must say that I find Eugenio Derbez’s critique rather harsh and unjustified. I have followed Selena’s career since her Disney days, and I can attest to her dedication, talent, and the depth she brings to her roles.
Selena Gomez has responded to Eugenio Derbez after he criticized her “Emilia Pérez” performance.
During an episode of the Spanish-language entertainment podcast “Hablando de Cine”, the actor from “Coda” criticized Gomez’s use of Spanish in the film as “unjustifiable”. Gomez, who is not fluent in Spanish, portrays Jessi del Monte in Jacques Audiard’s musical crime drama. This story revolves around a drug lord who attempts to leave behind his life of violence while secretly transitioning with the assistance of an emotionally invested lawyer, played by Zoe Saldana.
Selena’s performance was inexplicable,” Derbez stated. “When I watched ‘Emilia Pérez,’ everyone around me would look at each other in disbelief during her scenes, exclaiming, ‘Wow, what on earth is happening here?’
Discussing Film, host Gaby Meza agreed with Derbez. While she recognized Gomez as a “highly skilled actress,” she underscored that Spanish isn’t her primary, secondary, or even fifth language, which significantly affects the “subtlety” in her acting delivery.
As a film critic, I find myself questioning the dialogue of this actress. If she’s unclear about her lines, it severely limits her ability to infuse her performance with depth and subtlety.
Derbez expressed that he found the movie enjoyable apart from Gomez’s character, calling it an “intriguing experiment.” However, he pondered over why the French director Audiard chose to tackle a narrative deeply entrenched in a culture that is entirely alien to him.
Derbez commented, “I enjoyed the movie, except for some parts that stood out awkwardly. There are still redeeming aspects to it,” he said. However, he added, “It’s strange that the director doesn’t speak English or Spanish, yet the film is in both languages, set in Mexico, and I don’t feel a connection to the culture. It’s similar to me making a film in Russian without understanding the culture or speaking Russian, but talking in French.
After the clip circulated on TikTok, Gomez commented on a post of Derbez’s criticisms.
I see your perspective, and I apologize for any shortcomings, as I did my utmost with the limited time available. However, the effort and passion I invested in this film should not be overlooked.
Regardless of Derbez’s comments, Emilia Pérez continues to be a strong contender for this year’s Academy Awards, with a good chance at receiving nominations in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.
